1/3 Wishing a very happy birthday to @peakdistrict.bsky.social, which was established 75 years ago today.
The moors of the #PeakDistrict and #SouthPennines have changed significantly over the last 75 years, as these more recent pictures show (2019 and 2021).
Now that spring is (kind of) here, why not treat yourself to a aural little trip up into the #GreatNorthBog to enjoy the ambient vernal sounds of #Peatlands? There's an accompanying blog post if you want to find out more about what you can hear.

Sphagnum rubellum (red and orange) and papillosum ##moss #bryophyte
Three individuals crouched on open moorland in the South Pennines, holding plugs of sphagnum moss.
Lovely blog post from our friends at SAIL - it's always great to meet our supporters and show them exactly what they're helping to achieve in the #GreatNorthBog

Two people wearing waterproof outdoor clothing are working on a slope of bare peat in an upland landscape. One person is bending down to install equipment in the exposed peat, while the other stands nearby holding materials. Several plastic pipes and coloured markers are laid out across the dark peat surface. The surrounding area is covered with rough, grassy vegetation and rolling moorland.
@yorkshirepeat.bsky.social is trialling a new technique to address patches of steep bare peat, known as hags, using sheep fleece. Hags are tricky to restore as it's difficult to establish any vegetation to stabilise the peat.

The sunβs back π β perfect conditions for remote #Peat surveying. Time to get the drone in the air! #PeatRestoration #GreatNorthBog
Just a gentle reminder: we keep finding popped #Balloons on many of our site visits. Along with adding to plastic pollution, they can also pose a risk to wildlife. We know balloons are fun for celebrations, but please be mindful of where they end up. ππ #Peatland #GreatNorthBog #Pollution
Hi, no, afaik that's new firebreaks being dug.
Weβve started surveying #Fylingdales Moor to plan restoration after last yearβs #Wildfire. Itβs a desolate landscape. On the upside, areas with higher plant diversity and more Sphagnum moss seem less affected by the #Fire. I wonder why? π€π§ #GreatNorthBog #Water #Peatland @northyorkmoors.org.uk
ICYMI, our annual report (detailing the 24/25 restoration season) is available. Together with our partners, funders and landowners and managers, we've brought almost 52,000 hectares of the #GreatNorthBog under restoration management since 2009:

Some amazing art from the #Peat Appreciation Society exhibition at Gibson Mill at Hardcastle Crags (link in reply). It goes on until the end of April and it's looooovely. So boggy, so sphagnumy π #SphagnumMonday #GreatNorthBog
#Peatland monitoring takes place in all kinds of weather, even sampling bog water for carbon content #GreatNorthBog #Monitoring
2/2 #Sphagnum moss is essential for healthy peatlands, helping to store carbon, reduce flood risk and create habitats for plants and wildlife. If you are interested in getting involved, please email info@yppartnership.org.uk for further details. #GreatNorthBog #PeatlandRestoration
1/2 On the 23-24/02, YPP will be hosting a Sphagnum planting day at Castle Bolton. We are looking for local volunteers who might be interested in joining for the day - no previous experience required, just an enthusiasm to play a hands-on role in peatland restoration and climate action!
So it should be #SphagnumMonday but it seems all our peatlands have frozen over π₯Ά. There must be some bryophytes hidden under all that ice... somewhere #GreatNorthBog
