We explored experiences of moral distress described by ICU staff in both Alberta and Ontario during COVID-19. When it came to following new COVID-19 policy, they were damned if they did, and damned if they didn't.

I've had so many new followers recently, so I think a quick hello is in order!
I'm a critical qualitative health researcher who studies moral complexity in healthcare, and when I'm not doing that I'm usually either hosting a podcast, reading, crocheting, or napping!
It's so nice to see folks here!

Happy to start off the year with a new publication! We explore how family physicians engage in physical, narrative, and moral proximity with their patients - often in resistance to the current structuring of primary care in Ontario, Canada. Check it out! #MedSky

I was also fortunate enough to discuss this study on the BJGP podcast, where I go into more detail about how family physicians are often one of the only downstream solutions to upstream health and social welfare policy structuring:

Our study highlights how Canadian family physicians experienced moral distress when unable to help patients suffering from the impacts of structural and systemic issues related to racism, colonialism, substance use, and mental health. Link below!👇

Picture showing Monica’s progress on a blanket she is crocheting, with a ball of yarn on a yarn holder on the table in the top right corner. The blanket, which is roughly a foot wide, is made with a thick, light grey wool-type yarn with specks of black and brown. The stitches in the blanket look like small bubbles.

Slowly but surely working my way through a new wooly blanket for a Christmas gift - I forgot how many skeins of yarn are needed when you want to add texture 🧶

I didn't know that - thanks for educating me about this!

Hi Julie! I actually haven't done much research in these areas, but I fully agree - I wouldn't doubt that many physicians experience moral distress in being unable (either knowledge- or resource-wise) to help their patients in ways that feel meaningful. It's an important area for exploration!

#HiSciSky and #AcademicSky! 👋
I'm an assistant professor at McGill University that explores moral distress in health care providers, as well as experiences of morally and ethically complex health care. I use critical qualitative methodologies, including narrative and arts-based methods, to do it!
