A Red Admiral butterfly basking on the ground. Its wings are dark brown with a band of orange running across them and a cluster of white spots at the tip of each forewing.
A carpet of Bluebells growing under an avenue of trees in the gardens at Tregothnan.
The gothic mansion and formal lawns of Tregothnan with the deer park ha-ha in the foreground.
Four Red Admirals at Tregothnan this afternoon - the first I have seen this year. I wonder if there has been an arrival of migrants.
Certainly seemed to be in the last week or two across Cornwall. Saw a couple around St Ives along with a couple of Painted Ladies and a HBHM recently!

A first summer American Golden Plover which appeared today at Otmoor - a new county bird for me and quite a few others. Last one was in c 2012.
Ash dieback is having some odd disturbance effects in ancient woodland. The extra light under dying ash canopy is allowing these wild roses to go crazy, scrambling up the tree trunks to heights of 7 m, forming these funky columns.

Great Reed Warbler, Spurn 18/4/26
My morning walk along the gas terminal rocks in Easington was interrupted by a shout from Spurn when this Great Reed Warbler was trapped. Very welcome as I’ve been abroad when the last couple turned up, so thanks once again to the ringers #spurnbirds
Eastern Imperial Eagle in Skagen! Only the second adult to ever be seen in Denmark. The last adult was in 1990!
There’s a small chance of poisoning in the area - you can report it to the Natural England hotline on 0800321600 and they might test it. I think APHA might still be testing carcasses for Bird Flu so that’s another potential avenue you could go down.
Not much of a day to do anything outside so a good chance to finish these. Destined for @northronbirdobs.bsky.social #BirdArt #BirdingScotland

There is now a Pallas's warbler with the yellow-browed warbler in Trewyn Gardens!
@liamlangley1.bsky.social found a yellow-browed warbler singing in Trewyn Gardens this morning. It was also a good excuse to visit the Hepworth Sculpture Gardens at their most beautiful.
Yeah I walk through the gardens several times a week and not heard anything (might have heard a single call in October but nothing concrete). I wonder if it’s just the sunny weather causing them to sing pre-departure? It’s a subtle song that’s quite different from the call so maybe easy to miss?
Amazing moment this morning when I bumped into this singing Yellow-browed Warbler (end of video) in Trewyn Gardens, St Ives after finding one on Penryn Campus on Thursday! A welcome patch tick and an unexpected addition for my @patchbirding.bsky.social list! I wonder where it wintered? #UKbirding
The first Pallid Harriers and Black Kites have arrived at Skagen this spring!
Today I was graced by an adult female Pallid Harrier and an adult Black Kite.

Cormorants are difficult birds to handle so it is important to have good control of the neck at all times whilst handling. It is also important not to hold the neck too tight. This means that injury to the bird and the handler can be prevented.
It has been a couple stormy days at Skagen so night catching over the last couple days has been possible, but not successful.
So it was a real surprise to be able to hand catch this Cormorant last night.
It was even already carrying a ring. So hopefully we get some cool data from that.
A Grey Plover say on a dark rock facing right with the sea in the back ground. The bird is grey above, spangled with white and black across the wings and mantle, and pale off white below. The head is pale with a dark grey cap and a grey spot on the ear coverts. The bill is black and the legs are grey.
This Grey Plover found by @jonesgareth.bsky.social roosting on the rocks at the NW corner of St Ives Island was an unexpected @patchbirding.bsky.social tick this morning! 10 Purple Sandpipers also present in the same place. #birding @cbwps.org.uk
