If you need proof that everything becomes crabs, even the rocks are becoming crabs.
This is not a crab that merely looks like a rock do not be fooled.
In exciting news from back home in Wales, there's a tawny owl building a nest in the garden owl box for the first time!
Now I kinda need to go home π

I love this!
Wholesome thread.
I tried a couple of ways. First was to edit photo transparency in GIMP to isolate the subject and use an automatic colour picker site. And then tried a different website that allowed manual placement of the colour pickers to generate the palette/hexcodes. Then back to GIMP for image wrangling!
A tiny nudibranch sparkling against a brown algae background. The lower half of the image is a range of swatches - a gradient of silvers and greys - made from the nudi's colours.
A tiny Jorunna (pantherina, I think) in a shallow tidepool. A nudi that might look pale and grey from distance, but shines & sparkles up close because of its texture. Really like the gradient of silver and greys with the brown spots! π©Ά

"Sea slugs make killer web palettes" is not a sentence I ever expected to find myself saying, and yet
I love this!!!
This is so cool!
Really good tardigrade culture in the Invertebrate teaching lab today! #invertebrates #tardigrades
Close-up and front on with a large lumpy sea hare. A beautiful, silly, derpy kinda face, looking a bit bewildered by the strange biped peering at it adoringly. Lower half of the image contains swatches of the slug's colour palette, browns and beige, through to a bright lime green
Meet Doli. Dolabrifera. Look at that face! π
One of my first ever Sydney tidepool trips, I was busy looking for tiny nudis on shallow rocks, without realising like a herd of these slug-cows were RIGHT NEXT to me, incredibly well camouflaged.

If you love color or nudibranchs (why not both?) this thread is marvelous!
It's March here, so it's time to help me decide the vibe for the next art book cover for the end of April. Previous 4 covers are below.

I'm thinking either green or sepia.
Some kind of candy lying on a brown algae background. No wait, it is a nudibranch. White, pale pink, vivid ridiculous spots of magenta and sunflower yellow. Silly and beautiful. Lower half of the image contains swatches of the nudi's colour palette.
Always a rare treat when I am lucky enough to spot a tiny clown doris! One of my missions is still to get a better photo of one too π

I'm not really coming back quite yet, but I've been working on a backlog of my photos and I thought I'd pop back in to share these glamour shots of a Hermissenda crassicornis nudibranch.

Nature heals.
Natures creates.
Nature understands color like no other!
Close up with a beautiful nudibranch on a rocky reef. The lower half of the image is a palette of swatches made from the nudi's vibrant colours.
Once upon a time I just admired nudis and sea slugs.
But it was not enough. Now apparently I'm creating an R package to celebrate their colour palettes? π
First up, my Sydney fave, Hypselodoris bennetti.

Iβm really excited for this SF! With it weβre trying to combat the positive bias in publishing - how we and reviewers are inclined to only lift up research that goes as expected. But we all know there are so many lessons to be learned when you get unexpected results, or when things donβt work. π§ͺ
A tiny bubble snail in a shallow rockpool. Two tiny eye spots face upwards amidst a wealth of speckles and spots and sparkles that look like distant stars. The lower half of the image contains swatches of its earthy colour palette.
Low key, earthy colour palette, but when you look close, this species of bubble snail (Haloa) is speckled and spotted and looks like it is full of distant stars β¨
