Lovely story on the BBC about iceberg a23a, which has given us decades of fun but is now nearing its end…
Really enjoyed talking with Mark Poynting about this one-time behemoth.

In a new review led by Prof @iceybethan.bsky.social we outline three possible futures for the Antarctic Peninsula.
The bottom line? Decisions we make in this decade will shape the region’s climate trajectory for decades and centuries to come. 🇦🇶❄️🧪

Congratulations!! Wonderful news! Ace MSci researcher, and now... Doctor! 😊
We took Sky News to Rothera Research Station!
From underwater tsunamis to some seriously strange creatures, they've been sharing daily reports from down south.

You’ve heard of tsunamis before, but we bet you didn’t know they could be underwater and created by calving icebergs? 🌊
Like icebergs, much of a glacier is hidden under water so huge chunks of ice can break off, or calve. And when they do, they send shockwaves throughout the water.
🌊❄️ When Antarctic glaciers collapse into the sea, they can trigger huge underwater tsunamis that mix the ocean, affecting ice loss, climate and ecosystems.
The project I lead on this is now in the field and featured on Sky News:

This January we set sail on the @bas.ac.uk research vessel the Sir David Attenborough to collect a whole suite of new observations 🌊
Thanks for the nice write up of our forthcoming expedition in January! 🌊
Congratulations Dr Kaitlin Naughten on receiving the EGU Arne Richter Award for Outstanding Early Career Scientists!
Her work has transformed understanding of Antarctic ice-shelf melt and future sea-level rise.
She says, “It was a lovely surprise to hear that I'd won this prestigious award."

Antarctica may have passed a climate tipping point of no return, scientists are warning, with mounting evidence that a sudden slump in sea ice formation since 2016 is linked to human-induced ocean warming.
This month we’re featuring Dr Sian Henley, a marine scientist studying how climate change reshapes polar oceans and ecosystems, and how science can guide global action on ocean and climate change. #WomenInScience #IDWGS2025

Kaitlin Naughten giving presentation at the Royal Society this morning on how ice shelf melting will respond to a warming climate emphasises conclusion from her 2023 paper in Nature Climate Climate Change 🧵🧪🌊 -
Dr Kaitlin Naughten from BAS speaking at the Royal Society's workshop "Global impacts of climate extremes in the polar regions: is Antarctica reaching a tipping point?"
The observational record is too short, regionality too high to unequivocally attribute change across the ocean-ice-atmosphere & ecosystem.
