"In schools, we can use constraints to fuel engagement. This is because constraints can challenge us to think creatively and come up with innovative solutions" -

So why might different levels of Ed’n like small grp instruction? Senior Admin? Admin? Ts? Ss? Do Ss like sgi? What purpose does it serve and how does it achieve that goal? #iteachmath #elemmathchat #msmathchat

I LOVE this. When you don’t know the “rules” you are not bound by the imposed constraints of conventional thinking. This is how learning and innovation happens. This child probably didn’t ask “what if?” But just simply did and thought “I like it when I do this.” #mathchat #elemmathchat #iteachmath

Living In the Mathematical Moment Last week I posted an image of the end-result of a game I played with a pair of primary students on my X and Bluesky accounts. I have had a few questions about that game and So I thought I would ta…

These ar my favourite most versatile tool I’ve ever used. I love them. Here’s the answer to your question. More about the rods to come I’m sure.

Ss played a game that directly used these relational rods. They now need to score the total value of the rods. For reference, dark green on top=6. How would you calculate the sum? How do you think Ss would?

Using the levelling strategy, Neal says the mean of this data is 5.2. Nat says that the mean of this data set is 5.4. Who has a misconception? What would you ask?

Thank you so much. I will take any and all advice. Your words of encouragement mean the world to me. ☺️

I feel this. I have a book in me somewhere. I always have something to say. But when it comes to writing, I don’t know what it is I want to “say.” I always feel like everything has already been said.

How many? How do you know? Has your thinking changed from image 2? How might we use images like these to talk about inequalities? #unitchat #msmathchat #iteachmath

My friend Pam Harris posted over on another platform this prompt. What are your thoughts and how do you see my solution sparking conversation?

Great reps for #ConnectingReps reasoning routine to introduce circle graphs - use what you know about bar graphs to make sense of circle graphs

Fantastic! Please do remember to share pictures and or anecdotes of the learning!

How are these two representations the same? How are they different?

When would you choose to use each representation to communicate an idea and why?

I just used the “levelling strategy” to find the mean of this data set. I know it’s kind of 4, but what does that extra cube at the top represent? What misconceptions might your students encounter with this model & how would you support thinking

What q’s would you ask your students about this representation?

How would you help them think
Additively?
Proportionally?
Part to part?
Part to whole?

What might this represent?

“Cannot install app at this time. Please try again later.” Universally results in me deleting hundreds of “work photos.” 😂

However that being said I am a massive fan of re-engineering “rules” to fit new objectives or just fancy a change to see what happens!

I would like to respectfully push back that this is a real game for real students learning early counting principles. It may have a short shelf life, however tagging, stable order, cardinality, heierarchical inclusion, subitizibg, are all very important.
