From WIP 2 - Wishing You Knew

Ken's about to drop a hefty dose of honesty in Jacqueline's lap

She is an artist (musician) after all...but she has a lot to torment herself about, too. She made some stupid mistakes

4 hours ago 1 0 0 0

Jacqueline internalizes her mistakes & carries them silently playing what if scenarios in her head to learn from them.

Shannon has learned that mistakes, like failure, happen & tries to not let it get her down, but does try to learn from them

This book plus its sequel, The Blackbird of Chernobyl are fantastic books. 10/10 recommended by your friendly neighbourhood me.

Izzy knows who the note is from and at that moment, she'd definitely prefer a tax audit.

I recommend encouraging them elsewhere. Make somewhere else more inviting. This may require you to throw birdseed on someone else's balcony. Perhaps a paintball gun re-designed to shoot bird food instead.

Pretty much all of them! I write WLW romance, literary fiction. My MCs are all queer women.

They're too badass to care about signs, pictorial or otherwise. We humans put up spikes to deter them, they build nests out of those spikes.

But Izzy also rides a motorcycle and a bicycle to work most of the time (weather dependent)
Julie is growing fond of the motorcycle with time
Shannon and Jackie have bikes, but those are for fun/exercise

ClichΓ© or not, I'm pretty sure most of my characters would end up driving a Subaru. Practical/dependable, can haul a lot of things (musical instruments, plants, books, dogs), and none of my characters would go for flashy.

A grungy torn paper image in black and white. It has a Bywater Books logo in the upper left corner. In the middle of the image is a semicolor.

I knew I was starting to be a "real author" when I started getting bots here *and* bots spamming my email. It's like a scouting/guiding badge.

Great, informative post!!

Same. I started thinking about descriptions as dialogue between a blind character and a companion describing the situation/landscape/etc... for them. It works sometimes and helps me focus on the things that are most important, not the useless details.

Both! WIP 1 I jumped around. I focussed on Julie and then on Izzy and then on both of them together. WIP 2 I wrote in order, except for the epilogue which I wrote when I was able to handle it. WIP 3 has been mostly in order, but I've jumped a bit as necessary to keep 7 MCs and their plots straight.

Ending things. Once I start writing it's a race to about the last 3-5 chapters. Then I write slowly, delaying, because I don't want to stop writing/don't like saying goodbye. I'm getting there now with WIP 3.
Otherwise, highly emotional scenes can be a challenge that I put off.

Look on the bright side, Lucy, at least it's not the frantic Norwegian yelling about Bear stars and sons...

I don't have anything to promo at the moment, but if any of my mutuals are interested in beta reading WIP 2 (or 1 for that matter), let me know.

All of them eventually find a sense of belonging and home though... I like HEA

3 days ago 0 0 0 0

Absolutely! Julie flees home trying to flee who she is/doesn't want to be.
Jacqueline is forced from home and rejects the stability of said home.
Liv leaves her home after being rejected by family/friends

I think based on my answers to question 2, that I happen to draw on a sense of home quite often, but it's not always explicit. It's often presented in ways the characters interact with space and place.

I try to capture the immigrant experience with Liv in WIP 3. She struggles with a sense of belonging in both her new and old home because both are in conflict with different parts of her identity. She feels like only parts of her fit in either place, but neither place accepts her 100%
