New preprint: autistic children are very similar to non-autistic children in their decision-making parameters, and they can update their decision-making according to speed/accuracy instructions w/ @ljthomas1991.bsky.social osf.io/preprints/psyarxiv/w84rf_v1
New preprint: we find that autistic children are very similar to non-autistic children in their decision-making parameters, and that they can update their decision-making according to speed/accuracy instructions
Any postdocs outside the UK interested in applying for a Marie Curie fellowship with me (sensory processing, decision making, vision), get in touch! Our school of psychology @unibirmingham.bsky.social is offering costs towards a campus visit to give a talk, develop a proposal and attend training!
This week is Dyslexia Awareness Week #DAW25 and #WorldMentalHealthDay.
We found that mental health and self-esteem are top priorities for the dyslexia community, but little UK research funding goes to this area. doi.org/10.1002/dys.70004
Research funding must be targeted to support mental health.
New study where we looked at perceptual decision-making in autistic and non-autistic adults. We found overall shorter non-decision times in autistic adults and some relationships with ADHD-related traits journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...
Delighted to work with @thrivingautistic.bsky.social and our team on these new animations including @taraodk.bsky.social, @iara-abigalil.bsky.social, @fergus.oolong.co.uk , @scrappapertiger.bsky.social , @jessicakdoyle.bsky.social , Laura Buckland Mason and @somebodysomeone.bsky.social
Amazing postdoc job with absolutely lovely Jelle Van Dijk in Twente, Netherlands

Our symposium on applying diffusion models is about to start at #escop25 in LT5. Looking forward to the discussions!
Heading into Sheffield for #ESCOP25
I'm taking part in a symposium on using drift diffusion models for between group comparisons, organised by @ambercopeland.bsky.social
W/ @cmanning.bsky.social
Craig Hedge and Alekhya Mandali also speaking.
Lot to discuss, should be a great session!
A teal background graphic with the title “New Editorial Alert” at the top, featuring a red siren emoji and a paper labelled “Research.” The main text reads, “How well do we measure autistic sensory experiences?” Below, a circular graphic shows a clipboard with a pen, surrounded by icons representing the five senses: an ear (hearing), a nose (smell), an eye (sight), a mouth (taste), and a hand with a pointing finger (touch). The text around the circle reads: “Tell us about your sensory experience…”
New editorial: we highlight 5 key issues with current questionnaire measures used to assess autistic sensory processing. We argue this may be limiting both research and support. Better validated and more inclusive tools are needed.

At #insar2025!
Cathy Manning and Lou Thomas standing next to a poster on a poster board, smiling
Presenting work from our @wellcometrust.bsky.social grant, with @ljthomas1991.bsky.social, showing shorter non-decision times in autistic adults. Preprint of this work here: osf.io/preprints/ps...
Lou and Cathy smiling standing on either side of Lou’s poster
Poster presentation from my postdoc with @cmanning.bsky.social went well, thank you to everyone who came along to chat! Feeling very sleepy for the final day of #insar2025
Great presentation!
Lovely to meet you @brianirvine.bsky.social
Hopefully I'll be over it by tomorrow?! Wouldn't object to coffee though. Hope to see you soon
Good suggestion - I wouldn't be surprised if there are differences between community priorities and what is researched there too
Good plan! Do you want to drop me a message when you're finished?
Definitely! Need to hear how you're getting on in your new job!
So eager for #INSAR2025 that I've been awake and waiting since 2.30am (jetlag agh). I'll be giving a poster on perceptual decision-making using the diffusion model and links to ADHD traits on Friday 6-7PM 432.214. Hoping to chat with others interested in sensory processing, cognition etc #AutRes
Well done - it's such a skill being able to live post like you do!
Another plug for this paid opportunity for early career researchers to support Autism in our goal to publish work relevant to autistic people's quality of life
We are looking for folk who can transmit autistic community priorities + who would benefit from the chance to develop editorial skills
Excited to be presenting at this in July - a range of interesting seminars on circadian and visual neuroscience open to all #visionscience
At @journalautism.bsky.social we are looking for 2 advisory editors (suited for academics who can provide insight into autistic community priorities): journals.sagepub.com/pb-assets/cm... (deadline 25th April) and 5 action editors: journals.sagepub.com/pb-assets/cm... (deadline 23rd May)
#AutRes
Very pleased that the Special Issue of Visual Cognition on Teaching Sensation & Perception that @ankosov.bsky.social, @juliafstrand.bsky.social and myself edited is now published in full! If you're looking for some exciting ideas about teaching #VisionScience, start here!
