Adalia bipunctata, commonly known as the two-spot ladybird.

Lady beetles have declined in abundance by 39% since 1993 in experimental plots in Michigan. Rather than a steady decline, researchers found ups and downs with different rates of change and apparent drivers among species and across habitats. In PNAS Nexus: https://ow.ly/94Ur50YAFBG

A large-scale experiment shows that warmth brings #bees and #wasps out of #hibernation earlier – leaving some of them with poorer starting conditions. New paper @ecoresearchzoo3.bsky.social @funecology.bsky.social #climatechange

Increasing risks of post-experimental ecology - Nature Climate Change Nature Climate Change - Increasing risks of post-experimental ecology

There are ways in which I agree with this (strongly!), yet also, ways that I disagree (experiments are not the end-all be-all solution…scaling problems there!)

Nature conservation e.g. by NGO Fundacion Jocotoco, can help to bend the curve of biodiversity decline. The graph shows how large parts of the diversity comes back due to natural regeneraion of a rainforest. It illustrates the main finding of our study published in Nature: Protection restores 90% of species diversity in 30 years.

What if a predator hides in plain sight, by mimicking a deadly parasite?
A newly described spider from the Amazon (Taczanowskia waska) imitates a fungus that infects other spiders - combining appearance and behaviour to stay undetected. #LIBresearch

Figure 4 Yang (2026): (a) shoot biomass ratio (natives/range-expanders [RE]) of plants with and without grasshopper herbivory (Control, grasshopper) directly after summer drought; (b) survival ratio (natives/RE) of plants during rewetting, and (c) shoot biomass ratio (natives/RE) during rewetting under drought (including drought legacy effects from previous years) and under soil conditioning by natives (native legacy) and range-expanders (RE legacy) in soils from the Netherlands (North) or Hungary (South). The horizontal line represents a ratio equal to 1 (i.e., Shoot biomassrange-expanders = Shoot biomassnatives, Survivalrange-expanders = Survivalnative). Means ± 1 SE.

Digitally native species are a necessary shift in taxonomic practice Nature Reviews Biodiversity, Published online: 07 April 2026; doi:10.1038/s44358-026-00156-yBiodiversity science laments how little is known about the planet’s biodiversity, yet routinely discards much of the taxonomic evidence generated during species description. Digitally native species conceived and maintained in machine-actionable environments can both address shortcomings and broaden participation in taxonomy.
