The Sukhoi Su-7 (1944) was a high-altitude interceptor prototype, derived from the Su-6 ground-attack aircraft. The Su-7 was a mixed-power aircraft, with a Power came from a Shvetsov ASh-82FN piston engine with two TK-3 turbochargers in the nose and a Glushko RD-1-KhZ rocket engine in the tail. This mixed power approach was intended to solve the problem of intercepting fast, high-flying bombers before jet engines were mature enough to do the job alone.
To improved performance, the armour of the ground-attack version was removed.
The rocket boost would allow a rapid climb and speed surge to intercept targets that a piston engine alone couldn’t catch in time.
In 1945, the rocket motor exploded during flight testing, killing the pilot and destroying the aircraft.

She became increasingly obsolescent as turbine propulsion and the all-big-gun concept emerged in the early 1900s. She was placed in reserve and eventually paid off, being sold for breaking up in 1913, just as HMS Dreadnought had rendered her entire generation of battleships obsolete.

HMS Hood was a British Royal Navy pre-dreadnought battleship of the Royal Sovereign class, though significantly modified from her sisters.
Hood was laid down in 1889 at Chatham Dockyard and launched on 30 June 1891. She was designed by the Director of Naval Construction, Sir William White, and was intended to serve as a low-freeboard battleship, which distinguished her fundamentally from the high-freeboard Royal Sovereign sisters. The low freeboard was caused by the use of turrets to mount her main armament. Her sisters all used open topped barbettes. This design choice increased her displacement, so that she sat much lower in the water, making her a smaller target but also far less seaworthy in rough conditions.
Hood‘s active service career was relatively uneventful. She served with the Channel Squadron and later the Mediterranean Fleet, but her low-freeboard configuration meant she was of limited strategic utility compared to her more seaworthy sisters.

The Sukhoi Su-9 (1946) was an early postwar Soviet jet fighter prototype developed by the Sukhoi Design Bureau during the immediate aftermath of the Second World War. It should not be confused with the later supersonic interceptor of the same designation introduced in the late 1950s. The 1946 Su-9 belonged to the first generation of Soviet turbojet fighters, reflecting both indigenous design work and the significant influence of captured German technology.

The Mörkö-Morane was a Finnish-engineered upgrade of the French Morane-Saulnier M.S.406 fighter during WWII. Faced with rising losses in 1942, Finnish commanders decided to re-engine their obsolete Moranes with captured Soviet Klimov M-105P V-12 engines (1,100 hp) and aerodynamic refinements. Testing in 1943 showed it performed far above the original. It’s top speed reached 525 km/h and climb 25 m/s. Only 3 examples saw combat by the September 1944 end of the Continuation War. After the war, Finland completed all remaining conversions (totalling 41 aircraft) for training use by 1948. The last Finnish Moranes were scrapped by 1952.

The Nakajima A6M2-N Rufe was a single-seat floatplane interceptor developed as a stopgap to protect remote island bases and amphibious forces while purpose-built float fighters were pending. It was essentially a Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero (Model 11) modified with a central float and wingtip stabilizer floats. First flown on 7 Dec 1941, it entered service in 1942 and 327 were built. Compared to the land-based Zero, the Rufe was heavier and slower (max speed ~435 km/h vs ~533 km/h), but retained much of the Zero’s agility. It carried the same basic armament (2×20 mm cannons, 2×7.7 mm MGs) and could carry small bombs or rockets. Rufe units primarily served in the Solomon Islands, Aleutians, Dutch East Indies and home waters, operating from seaplane bases and tenders. Early on, many Rufes were lost in the Solomons (e.g. Tulagi, Aug 1942); they saw action intercepting US bombers (B‑17s, B‑24s) and defending island convoys. By 1944 they were outmatched by modern fighters, and production ceased Sept 1943.

The Petlyakov Pe-8 (originally designated TB-7) was a Soviet heavy bomber developed in the mid-1930s to meet requirements for a modern long-range strategic bomber to replace the aging Tupolev TB-3. The design team was led by Vladimir Petlyakov in the Tupolev design bureau, and the aircraft first flew on 27 December 1936. It entered service in 1940 and remained the only four-engined bomber fielded by the Soviet Air Forces in World War II. Production was limited by technological and supply challenges, and only about 93 aircraft were built by 1944.
