Peatlands store twice the amount of carbon than all the world's forests. They help control flooding, reduce wildfire risk, drought, and provide important habitat for rare wildlife. Wicken Fen is one of the last refuges for a host of species dependent on peatland soils.

It’s fab to see Arran being recognised for its unique geological heritage, rich biodiversity, and commitment to protecting their natural heritage.

A spray of elongate, pale green crystals. The crystals clump together into pointed bundles of various lengths. There is a 2cm scale bar, the specimen is 4cm wide.

📸 Lanarkite from Leadhills

Named for the county in which it was first found, lanarkite is a lead sulphate which forms from the oxidation of galena.

A common place to find lanarkite is in mine spoil heaps - galena rapidly oxidises when exposed to Scottish weather!

A black rock held in a person's hand in front of a corridor of white drawers. The rock is in three layers, a lower grey granite, on top of which sits a thick band of black mineral. At the surface of this band it is apparent that this is magnetite, the layer formed from radiating masses of stubby prismatic black crystals - hedgehog like. On top of this magnetite layer is a patchy layer of botryoidal black cryptomelane, it has a dull powdery lustre. There are also three patches of white bladed baryte crystals, stark against the black.

The manganese oxide (cryptomelane ) at Grandhome was mined in the early 1800s as an oxidising agent for making muriatic acid - then used as a bleach.
The mine closed by 1858 and today the site is inaccessible.

Connellite is a copper chloro-sulphate named in 1850 for Arthur Connell, professor of Chemistry at the University of St Andrews. Connell was the first person to study this mineral, though it was first found from Cornwall, not Scotland.
