Soaked to the Bone I had literally no idea that racoons existed in the wild in Europe until I bumped into this exceedingly wet critter on a forest walk nearly Jelenin in Poland after a torrential summer rainstorm. It turns out that racoons were intentionally released into the wild in Germany in 1934, when four raccoons were released near Lake Edersee, and later on another 25 individuals escaped a fur farm in 1945.

Synagogue to Scale I had often seen the gilded dome of the restored synagogue in Berlin when passing in front, and I finally went to visit it in 2023. What I hadn't realised is that they had left the main hall of the synagogue demolished - and it leaves quite a strong impression when you see it exposed like this. Luckily we have two people at the bottom of the image to really drive home how huge this structure is. Buy Print

Luminance A fascinating architectural detail from the Museum of the Avantgarde in Dresden. The ceiling/floor above appears to be hanging in mid-air, not touching the central concrete column. Heightening the impact of the effect is the light emitting from a hidden spot above, such that the concrete disappears into pure brightness - there is no indication of an end. The lack of reference points in the image also leaves us with nothing from which we can work out the scale of the shapes involved - and the textured concrete, no doubt imprinted on wooden boards as it was setting, seem to lend their textures to the blown out white. You can almost reach out and touch the light and feel its roughness. Buy Print

Blind Lines Perhaps this is just an architectural photo, but I'm including it in my abstract weekends because I love how the shapes and lines take over from "what it is". But for those curious as to what it actually is - at Werderscher Markt in Berlin's Mitte district stands the Federal Foreign Office (in German "Auswärtiges Amt"). The agency occupies two buildings, one of which was the former Reichsbank building.

Follow the Crowd II Another blur of bodies, unknown stories, unresolved paths. One seems clipped, shorn in two - but is perhaps emerging from behind an object. A hand melds with a face, shoulder and arm shrink into each other. Taken at Positions, the huge art market that takes over Flughafen Berlin during the annual Berlin Art Week. Buy Print

Black-Eyed Susan Vine I'm about as confident as can be that this is Thunbergia alata, aka Black-eyed Susan Vine - a five-petalled flower with an eye-catching black hole in its centre. Funnily the nickname is also given to certain Rudbeckia flowers, but I think it feels even more apt for Thunbergia alata. This flower was spotted in the excellent Gardens of the World in Berlin. Fennpfuhl Feels hard to believe that a little over a month ago the lake at Fennpfuhl was still completely frozen. It's a little hard to tell in this photo, but if you look closely you'll see the lake surface has little puddles all over it in between dark ice. The weather had just turned and we'd gone from -11c to +17c in a very short space of time.

Why so serious? As seems to happen every time we visit Tierpark Berlin, we find another section that we've never seen before. This time I was absolutely floored to see before me a Steller's Sea Eagle. A bird of outstanding beauty, which is considered to be the heaviest eagle in the world, weighing in between a whopping 5 to 10Kg. I couldn't help but anthropomorphise that this particular bird had a very serious face, as though it's just realised that job opportunities are going to be a lot scarcer for its children than for itself.

Mask Up In Berlin's Hamburger Bahnhof art museum an exhibition was being presented titled "An Opera Out of Time" by Petrit Halilaj. The exhibition was made up of various elements of stage and costume design from the opera which, if I remember correctly, was only performed once. Instead of allowing all that creative work to go to waste, this exhibition was prepared, and whilst it wasn't all to my taste, I found the contrast of this floating mask quite visually appealing. Youtube preview tile of a video titled 8 Hours of New Age Cassette Tapes 1974-1992, the cover image is of a man sitting in a leather recliner with a portable stereo sitting on the table next to him, accompanied by a glass of opaque red liquid. The man's shiny blue shirt is unbuttoned, revealing a crystal amulet nestled on his chest hair. In the man's right hand, a crystal orb raised to about eye level.

Whew, what a day. Time to pour myself a tall glass of tomato juice, unbutton my silk shirt, and listen to eight hours of New Age cassette tapes. Pass the orb, brother!

Sausage and Cheese A market stall in one of Dresden's many Christmas markets. Whilst it's not specifically festive, I guess people need their cheese and sausage regardless what time of year it is. The cheese I can get behind, but the dangling bits of animal, let's just say it's not for me 😁

Stories to Tell This study of texture and abstract shape comes to us thanks to an old olive tree, whose intricate whorled and knurled bark gives the impression of a long time spent watching the world go by. In fact, I believe this particular tree has spent no less than 600 years mostly unperturbed by the changes in the world around it. It grew up in Pollença in Mallorca, but was relocated to Palma de Mallorca in 1989. When you think how many generations of humans it has seen pass by it is nothing short of humbling. Buy Print

Anemone of the Landed Variety Whenever I hear the word Anemone (not a frequent occurrence I assure you), for some reason I immediately think of sea anemone, instead of the floral, land-based plant version. I've learned today that Sea Anemone take their name from these beautiful flowers, so the association is relatively forgivable! I just love how intricately detailed this flower is, and hopefully it makes for a nice contribution to #bloomscrolling. Buy Print

Green Balcony A balcony overlooking a hof (courtyard) near Linienstr in Berlin has been turned into a lush nature experiment by its owners, with climbers and plants bursting forth from every aspect. The deep greens of these thriving plants offset beautifully against the blue sky and the orange-red wall of the house. It certainly looks like a nice place to while away some hours. Buy Print

Ant On A Mission On vacation in Poland I moved part of a BBQ stand only to discover that I had disturbed a nest of ants that seemed to have set up a hatchery inside one of the legs. Very quickly the ants mobilised to collect all the vulnerable eggs and relocate them. I felt bad for having disrupted them, but then having your nest inside something that will have extremely hot fires is probably not the best idea, so perhaps better to get disrupted now before the next holiday home tenants arrive and feel like a bit of outdoor cooking! Part of the Whole VI An ultra-macro shot of a twig frozen in resin at the ABA Art Gallery in Mallorca, which was showing a collection of works by Adriana Meunié. It was an inspiring set of works combining differing types of materials and weaving and traditional handicrafts with a more abstract art approach. I loved the little trapped air bubles. Buy Print

Shape Stacking Up a spiral staircase in the Museum of the Avantgarde in Dresden is a small library of art-related books which you are welcome to peruse at your leisure, but I must say I found the architecture of the place equally fascinating, with unusual sights like a concrete wall appearing to sit atop a relatively thin metal shelving unit, and in doing so, carving out an unusual set of shapes - augmented by contrasting textures.
