Always great to have some live aphids join us for teaching labs - today to our Diploma in IPM students. Wheat on left has been newly colonised by aphids, while plant on right has had high aphid feeding for 2-3 weeks.

This is a very inspiring video about the All Ireland Pollinator Plan, showing what can be achieved for biodiversity when communities come together. A lot has been achieved, but there's still more to do. To see what you can do to join the action, check out www.pollinators.ie youtu.be/w2gV75_icTY?...

Trucked-in honeybees may edge out bigger bumblebee foragers The finding could guide beekeepers to keep hives out of most vulnerable areas of the Irish heathlands.

Bumblebees behave differently in areas with more honeybees. Does this represent competition and what can we do about it? Really, we need to learn more. Great to have funding from @researchireland.ie to continue this work, and hopefully provide better advice for beekeeping and conservation

Social Democrats ‘hugely concerned’ by nitrates derogation extension The extension of the nitrates derogation must be used to draw up plans for its phase out, says Jennifer Whitmore of Social Democrats.

“This will be our sixth nitrates derogation since 2006. Every time the derogation is extended, we hear the same commitments that water quality will improve.

It has yet to happen. In fact, our waterways are continuing to deteriorate."

Well said, Jennifer Whitmore 👏

I’m obsessed with deep sea sharks: their bioluminescent spots are just visible in the pitch black environment they live in Most of these little-known but already endangered fish have never been seen alive in their natural habitat, but are under threat from bottom trawling and deep-sea mining

"𝐖𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐲 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐩𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚 𝐡𝐮𝐠𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩-𝐬𝐞𝐚 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬."

Sobering piece in @theguardian.com by Dr Ruth Leeney of @ucddublin.bsky.social on her deep-sea sharks research, and how marine life is being ravaged by bottom trawling.

mass email by student to a potential phd advisor

mass email by student to a potential phd advisor

Dear student trying to get into a PhD program:

Don't do this!
Don't mass email faculty
Look for potential advisors & email them one by one
Tell them about your genuine interest and passions
explain why you think this advisor is ideal
Getting a new student is a HUGE commitment
