This is an old sketchbook I've had for about 25 years, but never really used. It's a behemoth. 8.5"x11", 300(?) pages, thin wood pulp paper that's barely worth more than office printing paper, a cheap cloth hardcover which is trying hard to fall off at this point. Damn thing must weigh five pounds. I think I probably got it with my last ten buck at a store that no longer exists, like Borders or something.

The inside cover, featuring some bootleg OBEY GIANT stickers. Repping back before it all became a lifestyle brand, and Mr. Fairey became a milquetoast liberal parody of himself. Bjork is still the queen, though. Back in the day, at the beginning of my perpetual art student days, being so fucking broke (not that I'm much less broke now) I remember any dedicated art supplies being precious -- like too precious to want to use. I've always had to make myself work in sketchbooks. Loose paper has always been fine for me, so developing a habit with books took some doing, and I don't think I got "good" at it until recently -- if I even have gotten "good" at it. What I do know is that I've formed a habit over many years of buying blank books, thinking about all that exciting potential, all that bullshit "you should have a sketchbook!" lies, and then struggling to work in them. I'm going through stuff. I'm looking to get rid of what I haven't touched, and finish out what I have already started working with. No sense in hoarding. I don't even have a permanent home, much less a work space to store and use all this shit. The expressions are more important than the means and materials.

Page 1. Random sketches. One man's face, with weirdo eyes, drawn probably around the turn of the Millenium. The rest are quick girl sketches drawn last night. Having old drawings to work over with new drawings is actually kind of an exciting exercise. I do not go in too much for this social media fueled movement of recent years to treat sketches as finished work, and sketchbooks as art objects. My whole life, sketchbooks were personal! However, I have to acknowledge that there is most certainly appeal in that peek behind the curtain. I seem to get far more engagement showing of my rough shit, than I tend to do with more finished work. I guess, during a time and a culture where it's compulsory to scream into the void on a daily basis, if not hourly, a thousand shitty sketches count more than a few works of polished craft. As is made quite apparent with THIS fucking book, it takes me forever to fill a sketchbook, if it gets filled at all. To be completely real about it, I don't care when I start up a new sketchbook, and I don't care when it gets filled. I must have about a dozen "active" sketchbooks. Whichever is within reach is the one getting used, and I suppose this will be no different. We'll see. The real point of this is that I have a whole lot simmering within me, and it needs to come out before it boils over. And I think a big, bulky, heavy, cheapass tome is suitable for the purpose.

I've been lugging around this sparsely-used book for about 25 years. I've got some shit to work out; this old monster is going to be great for the job.
