I'm embracing the old, trashy quality of this book and all the old, trashy sketches it contains, and I've decided to use it to play with all the old, trashy supplies I keep hauling around with me everywhere I go, but never use. In a few of these spreads, I break out gel pens and markers, which are not at all my preferred drawing material. I just think it would be nice to draw with color.

First spread, my thoughts on capitalists, as related through hot ladies and cyber-monsters. Second spread, some quick new sketches along with old -- oh, but which is which!? Third spread, by far the ugliest, where I'm just testing pens and markers to see if they work, and if they work, how they work on the thin paper in the book. Fourth spread, more ugly pen testing and old sketches! NEAT

Some very ugly sketchbooking, as it should be.

A two-page sketchbook spread, featuring sexy women who hate you, various implements of war, a cool robot, and the worst sketch ever drawn of Allstar Seaworthy, lead character from the 1980s Smurfsploitation cartoon, Snorks.

I choose to sooth my ongoing anxiety by drawing bombshells who live up to the label, and actively want you violently erased.

A two-page sketchbook spread, featuring a few scratchy old, unfinished sketches from 25 years ago, and new sketches of pinup girls with a vicious attitude, holding dangerous weapons. It's mixed media, featuring ink, paint, and colored pencil.

More new drawings in a very old sketchbook. It's a lot of fun taking paint markers to the tape holding this poor book's binding together.

This is an old sketchbook I've had for about 25 years, but never really used. It's a behemoth. 8.5"x11", 300(?) pages, thin wood pulp paper that's barely worth more than office printing paper, a cheap cloth hardcover which is trying hard to fall off at this point. Damn thing must weigh five pounds. I think I probably got it with my last ten buck at a store that no longer exists, like Borders or something.

The inside cover, featuring some bootleg OBEY GIANT stickers. Repping back before it all became a lifestyle brand, and Mr. Fairey became a milquetoast liberal parody of himself.

Bjork is still the queen, though.

Back in the day, at the beginning of my perpetual art student days, being so fucking broke (not that I'm much less broke now) I remember any dedicated art supplies being precious -- like too precious to want to use. I've always had to make myself work in sketchbooks. Loose paper has always been fine for me, so developing a habit with books took some doing, and I don't think I got "good" at it until recently -- if I even have gotten "good" at it. What I do know is that I've formed a habit over many years of buying blank books, thinking about all that exciting potential, all that bullshit "you should have a sketchbook!" lies, and then struggling to work in them.

I'm going through stuff. I'm looking to get rid of what I haven't touched, and finish out what I have already started working with. No sense in hoarding. I don't even have a permanent home, much less a work space to store and use all this shit. The expressions are more important than the means and materials.

Page 1. Random sketches. One man's face, with weirdo eyes, drawn probably around the turn of the Millenium. The rest are quick girl sketches drawn last night. Having old drawings to work over with new drawings is actually kind of an exciting exercise.

I do not go in too much for this social media fueled movement of recent years to treat sketches as finished work, and sketchbooks as art objects. My whole life, sketchbooks were personal! However, I have to acknowledge that there is most certainly appeal in that peek behind the curtain. I seem to get far more engagement showing of my rough shit, than I tend to do with more finished work. I guess, during a time and a culture where it's compulsory to scream into the void on a daily basis, if not hourly, a thousand shitty sketches count more than a few works of polished craft.

As is made quite apparent with THIS fucking book, it takes me forever to fill a sketchbook, if it gets filled at all. To be completely real about it, I don't care when I start up a new sketchbook, and I don't care when it gets filled. I must have about a dozen "active" sketchbooks. Whichever is within reach is the one getting used, and I suppose this will be no different. We'll see.

The real point of this is that I have a whole lot simmering within me, and it needs to come out before it boils over. And I think a big, bulky, heavy, cheapass tome is suitable for the purpose.

I've been lugging around this sparsely-used book for about 25 years. I've got some shit to work out; this old monster is going to be great for the job.

A mixed-media rendering of a nude woman's figure, seen from the backside, with some sort of strange, wired-up cybernetic head contraption is drawn to a precarious ledge by the glow of light. The light is being generated by organic/mechanical coil structures of indeterminate size, seemingly floating in the dark beyond the ledge. There are wires and cords plugged into the cyber-woman's head, serving as a sort of tether, and lots of wires and cords hanging off of the coil structures. The color palette is mostly cool, with deep blues and greens, punctuated by the light bouncing off the cyber-woman's skin, and a few focal points of harsh yellows and oranges being generated by the coil structures.

A pinup of Pussy-Kitty, a sexy, curvy "catgirl" (she's not really a catgirl -- she just likes wearing the ears, and a little bit of costume makeup -- but she does purr when you pet her) with Bettie Page hair, and classic pinup vibes. She's standing, casually but seductively, arms resting on the threshold of the panel borders, gazing past the fourth wall. She's fully nude, except for the kitty ears and some elbow-length gloves. Stage 1: rough pencil sketch.

Midway through tightening and underpainting, but I like how this little stage of the process looks.

This account needs some resuscitation. Here's a sketchy Pussy-Kitty. Much more soon to come.
