Happy #worldseagrassday! 🌱
Strange to think that I’ve been working with these indomitable little marine plants on and off for the past ten years now.
The video below was taken from drone, it shows an emerged intertidal eelgrass meadow in South West England criss-crossed with tidal channels.

Congratulations!! Could you help me advertise this PhD position on seagrass conservation and physiology? Thanks

I am pleased to say that I have finally submitted my PhD thesis! It's been an incredible journey to get to this point, looking forward to sharing my findings!
Good news stories such as this show that we absolutely can put nature into recovery - with the right political will and support - but we need a lot more of this to really bend the curve of biodiversity decline..

Hey folks! Interested in seagrass and other coastal submerged aquatic planty things? This starter pack is for you!
It’s small for now, so hit me up if you’d like to be added!

#PhD opportunities are like buses - you wait for ages and then two come along at once! Check out this chance to work with @benciotti.bsky.social, Michael Collins & me on 'Environmental drivers of variation in populations of sandy beach #fishes' www.plymouth.ac.uk/schools/scho... Please share 🏖 🐟
The deadline for the interdisciplinary #PhD with myself at Bangor, Mark Fitzsimons, Plymouth and Rosie Williams, ZSL has been extended to 6th Dec! It will research how AMR and antibiotics from wastewater affect marine mammals and the ecosystem.

Check our new paper reporting that Mediterranean seagrasses provide essential coastal protection under climate change.
Bottom line: Seagrass loss may double the risk of coastal flooding with rising sea levels.

⚠️Over 80% of the #EU’s #MPAs only marginally regulates human activities.
🤏0.2% are #fully or #highly protected.
🌊Reaching the EU’s 10% strict protection target will require radical changes to the regulation of activities in EU MPAs.

Squid Parts of a squid are labeled: Mantle (covers organs), fin, gladius/pen (internal, chitin structure), arm, tentacles, eye, siphon (for moving with jet propulsion), beak, radula Squid have 8 arms and 2 tentacles. Arms are tapered and have suckers all along them. Tentacles are more elastic and only have suckers on their ends. Some species' suckers have rings of serrated teeth or hooks. Cephalopods are measured by their mantle length, because their limbs are muscular hydrostats. This means they expand and contract as needed and do not have a static length.
Inside a Squid Drawing of a squid with internal organs labeled: Beak, complex brain, esophagus, pen/gladius, stomach, gonad, brachial heart, gill, systemic heart, ink sac Squid have 3 brains- one behind each eye and a central, doughnut-shaped brain surrounding the esophagus. If they take too big a bite, they risk damaging their brains. Cephalopod means "head-foot," a reference to the structure of these molluscs. Most cephalopods is the suckers in their arms to taste their environment to help determine what is or isn't prey.

Front cover of the Marine Biological Association's: The Marine Biologist Magazine. Cover image of shallow seagrass underwater.
Image of magazine article from the aforementioned The Marine Biologist magazine. There is text and several images of intertidal seagrass, and mud, lots and lots of mud. Also several unfortunate souls stuck in said mud. There is also, forgood measure, some more mud. Also a drone image i'm rather fond of showing a big green square of very dense intertidal seagrass.
Really nice to see Martin Attrill's and my article 'Marvellous Meadows' in the latest Blue Carbon focused MBA Marine Biologist magazine!
We focus on cutting edge research of carbon stocks in subtidal and intertidal seagrass present in Plymouth Sound and the Tamar estuary🌱🌊
Informative thread on the recent estimates of the ocean carbon sink and its variability 🧵🧪
The image shows a sandy seabed with bright green strands of seagrass swaying in the current. A brown Spiny seahorse with white speckles and spiny protrusions rests on the seabed, a beautiful deep turquoise sea can be seen stretching out beyond the fronds.
It’s #WorldSeagrassDay 🌊
Seagrass meadows are biodiversity hotspots, home to thousands of species.
What's more, they act as incredible carbon sinks, helping combat climate change.
But 92% of the UK’s seagrass has been lost.
Protecting & restoring what we have left is vital.
A photo of me in waders covered in mud holding a sediment core on an intertidal seagrass meadow with bits of field equipment scattered around.
Happy World #seagrass day! 🌱
Currently busy writing up my first PhD paper on #bluecarbon in intertidal seagrass meadows in Southwest England.
