The #Artemis II crew has just been given their upcoming distance of closest approach to the Moon as 4067 statute miles and they replied jokingly that they would prefer the number in kilometers and parsecs.
Astronauts... they're just like us [astronomers] ! 🥲

NASA using psi, fps, mph, etc. in a moon mission in 2026! USA is weird.
This, however, is not a reason why Guardian, a British paper, should have to use imperial (sorry, US customary) units with a readership that almost entirely was taught in metric – especially when reporting STEM news!!
Thousands of runners are expected to take part in the 2026 Brighton Marathon on 12 April. The first event in the city took place in 2010, with just over 7,500 competitors, but more than 20,000 participants are expected to start the 26.2-mile (41.1km) race this year.
If you’re running the Brighton Marathon this year, please be aware that the course is half a mile shorter for people using metric measurements than for those using imperial.

Netflix is so dumb. Watching something in Norwegian and the English subtitles convert all metric units to imperial 🙄
I'd forgotten how exciting it is to watch a moonshot. And I'd forgotten how weird it is to hear NASA using mph and feet. It's the 21st century, guys. Metric!
John Frewen-Lord tells us about his experiences of living in Cyprus, and how they completed #metrication successfully, unlike the UK.

Sadly, 50 years (and at least 2 generations) later, the BBC still often unnecessarily wibbles about “acres”, “inches of snow”, “yards” of distance, and even wacky Fahrenheit weather, and the rare times they don’t refer to odd “186 mph trains” [sic], they say kh’lomitrs and not kilo-metres 🙄🤷♂️ #metric

This happened to me a few years ago when I took my (then) new car for an MOT with the odometer set to km. They didn't spot the unit and logged the miles as the figure in km, meaning now my MOT history shows my mileage spiking that year and then going *down*. I do wonder how many times that happens…
I assume you know about the BBC Rationalised foot as a scale?

I did listen. Thank you, Dr Peter! I had all but given up hope before you started speaking, with Claire waffling about her 2 L car.
It’s gold-standard ludditism, isn’t it? Why isn’t she still buying bushels of oats for her pony?
Listen to our Chair, Dr Peter Burke, on BBC Radio Bristol live shortly (sometime after 12:00), as the following question is discussed:
"Everything we buy is measured in kg, but when we talk about weight loss we go back to stone and pounds, why is this?”

I would add that Australia has been completely metric for decades (e.g. km, km/h, kg, etc.) unlike the UK's confusing hybrid approach with the legal use of imperial measurements, such as miles for road distances, mph for speed, pints for beer and milk, and stones for body weight.
Last year, I hired a car in Northern Ireland. I should have been able to switch the digital speedo from imperial to metric going into the Republic, but the rental company helpfully locked the settings, and I had to drive while attempting mental arithmetic. Did not like...
2 decimal coins from 1971: A 2 NEW PENCE coin, and a ½ NEW PENNY coin.
The musical film "Half a Sixpence" was released in 1967 - the same year in which the last pre-decimal coins 🪙 were minted.
"Half of Two and a Half new pence" didn't have quite the same ring to it, but that didn't stop #decimalisation 55 years ago today.

When will TV shows and media go fully metric? All products are in metric in the shops. Science uses metric. Imperial hasn't been taught for a couple of generations now, yet Gladiators talks about a "16 foot drop" (although contestants' stats are in metric).
Mad that we persist with crazy units.

Another consequence of the UK's failure to switch to kilometres
It seems the same computer system was being used across UK and Ireland for some car warranty applications, and km-odometer readings in Ireland were taken to be miles, leading to overcharging.

These are screen grabs of what we see as we scroll down the webpage after selecting km/h for wind speed units:
Not tested the app, but on the website, changing WIND SPEED UNITS to "Metres per second (m/s) or km/h" (via the cog icon at the top of the screen) still has no effect on display of wind gust speeds - they remain in mph.
Also, inconsistent use of 12h/24h times. Why has 12h clock been introduced?

Main issues for me: No hourly wind gusts in main table. No option to change units, e.g. metric units for wind speed. In detailed sections and maps: no momentum scrolling or overscroll bounce effect, and scrolling only works if you swipe on icons or text.
I wish QI would decide if it’s a metric programme or an imperial one.
