I can see how that might appear to be true. The modern game setting of session zero being tied to current or recent desire to appeal to a broad audience.
However, for what it's worth, I've been doing a session zero since my second campaign, starting in 1981
It has been my experience that every roleplaying game that is run with the idea of there being more than one session or intending to be a campaign will benefit from a session zero.
Further, a campaign guide is not a bad idea either.
A cluttered but cosy desk set up ready to paint miniatures, surrounded by horror themed decor on shelves and the walls.
This is where I shall be spending my evening.
And I'm pretty happy about that.
