An interesting read. The decline in trust is very real. That there has always been "activism" of various kinds among academics, but I think it's fair to say that the "activist scholar" has never been more prominent than in recent times. And that's taking its toll on trust (and respect).

Hard to beat a day like this at the office. #LoveQUB

In this context it would also be quite useful to consider countries that indiscriminately launch missiles into Israel with the explicit intent of maximising civilian deaths (Iran, Lebanon) with those who do not (Jordan, Egypt, etc.). There is no problem in the latter.
"The U.S. nearly turned into a net crude exporter last week for the first time since World War Two". Astounding. We're lucky to have the US "shale revolution" supply option in these times. #oilandgas #IranWar www.reuters.com/business/ene...
Hoping attendance at @isanet.bsky.social's annual convention can rebound. The great attraction is the breadth of panels and the opportunity to meet more likeminded scholars than at any other conference. Moreover, Georgia is the most #WaffleHouse-dense state in the union, so count me in! #ISA2027
Keeping up here as best I can. Picked this up from the Princeton UP stand at the PSA conference in Oxford week before last.
Seems a bit inappropriate for a first post on a Sunday. How about Happy Easter?
See what a morning, gloriously bright

My Oxford #PSA26 conference haul, for me and for the kiddo. From, respectively, @princetonupress.bsky.social at the conference and from Blackwell’s.
Trump has arrived at the Supreme Court to sit in on birthright citizenship arguments, the first such appearance by a president.

If I was flying Business Class I’d be demanding *no* WiFi for a more pleasant experience. That and a quiet rule. #aviation #travel
Always difficult to walk the streets of Oxford and not see this hallowed seat of learning through the eyes of Inspector Morse. A peek into The Randolph, and a look up the Carfax Tower to see whether any dead bodies have been found atop it or flung down its walls today. Nice to be back for #PSA26.
A fascinating study of a "Big Oil Company" and geopolitical risk, especially as the company on which the case study is based is anonymized! www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
This is going to be tough in an age of bitterness, but I'm going to try and switch to positive messaging on social media.
And you're needed even more now than ever. Keep up your presence.
The fruits of a genuine, US-style liberal arts education! :)
I remember learning about the #Holocaust in school. It seemed entirely remote and evil beyond comprehension. I never thought that a mere few decades later #antisemitism would (yet again) become the primary source of moral rot in the West.
As a bonus, the article contains a reference to Tom Wolfe's, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test (1968).
I have a new article in ERSS. A claim to novelty is that the concept of a distinct American “petroculture” constitutes a useful analytical lens for understanding divergence among IOCs in terms of how they position themselves in the #energy transition. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Decades later, Mugabe took a leaf out of the East German land redistribution playbook. With predictable results. (From Katja Hoyer’s Beyond the Wall.)
As someone who can safely say I’ve spent more time at Waffle House than any other European, you don’t get there by taxi (although you’re not always entirely sure how you got there).
This NY Times piece by @dgelles.bsky.social argues that the world was making progress on #climate change mitigation, but "[t]hen, Donald #Trump returned to the Oval Office". No recognition of the fact that nearly all demand growth is in the Global South incl. China. www.nytimes.com/2026/03/19/c...
On any conceivable measure the world (including Europe) will continue to demand enormous amounts of oil and gas for decades to come. So the concern is ensuring security and diversity of that oil and gas supply while *also* rolling out renewables to meet growing demand in the global energy addition.
Ah yes, because prior to this #Iran was no one knew that the #Gulf region is a key supplier of #oilandgas worldwide.
It's been a long time coming. #ExxonMobil plans to move its legal home to #Texas from New Jersey, joining other companies that have relocated to the Lone Star state in search of a more business-friendly environment #oilandgas www.wsj.com/business/ene...
It is now apparently "raining oil" in Tehran. The city drowning in oil is a poignant illustration of the vagaries of the petrostate. #petrocultures
