It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Otus, our beloved Western Screech Owl ambassador. Otus helped us connect visitors to the incredible world of owls. He will be deeply missed by our staff, volunteers, and all who had the chance to meet him.
Meet Narwhal, a Great Horned Owl, who was left him with a fractured wing after a vehicle collision. Although he healed, his flight is no longer silent enough for hunting, making life in the wild impossible. #wildlifeconservation #owls #GreatHornedOwl

We’re incredibly grateful to have such wonderful community partners! #thankyou #grateful

Recently, a Horned Grebe turned up on a dock here in Sitka, AK, calm, unbothered by people, and completely out of place.
After a full checkup in our clinic, we were happy to find this Grebe was in surprisingly great shape. #WildlifeRehab #HornedGrebe #SeabirdRescue #BackToTheWild

Can you hear that chirping? That's Flash, our American Goshawk, using her food begging calls, saying 'excuse me, where's my snack?' Our handler is using positive reinforcement to help Flash learn that quiet behavior gets rewarded. #PostitiveReinforcement #Goshawk #WheresMyFood
For such a powerful bird, the Bald Eagle has a surprisingly shrill sounding call, usually a series of high-pitched whistling or piping notes.
Did you know Hollywood sound editors often dub over a Bald Eagle's call with the screams of a Red-tailed Hawk?

Have you ever wondered why bird blood looks so different from ours under a microscope? Unlike mammals, whose red blood cells are round, flat, and have no nucleus, bird red blood cells are elliptical and nucleated. #DidYouKnow #BirdBiology #WildlifeConservation
Did you know American Kestrels, like Fe, are the smallest falcon species in North America? These tiny powerhouses weigh about as much as a stick of butter, a cup of flour, or a ball of yarn! #AmericanKestrel #DidYouKnow #SmallButMighty
Did you know we use "Physical Therapy" on our patients? 🦅 Here at the Alaska Raptor Center, injured birds like Ghost, a Bald Eagle recovering from a gunshot, get specialized physical therapy to keep their wings healthy and flexible. #PhysicalTherapy #BaldEagle #WildlifeRescue
Snow day in Sitka! ❄️ While schools may be closed, our resident birds are taking the weather in stride. Cozy perches, sheltered spaces, and a little extra relaxation, not a bad way to spend a winter morning. #SnowDay #RaptorCare #WildlifeConservation
Did you know ravens take snow baths? Snow baths work just like a regular bath to keep feathers in top condition, which is especially important during the long winter months. Who needs a spa day when you have fresh powder? #SnowBath #Ravens #FunnyAnimals
When we talk about raptors, we don’t mean the dinosaurs! Raptors are birds of prey, meat eating birds adapted for hunting. In North America, this group includes eagles, owls, hawks, falcons, ospreys, and kites. #Raptors #BirdsOfPrey #DidYouKnow
Did you know owls can’t move their eyes? Instead, owls can rotate their heads up to 270 degrees in each direction, allowing them to scan their surroundings without moving their bodies. #Owls #DidYouKnow #FunFactFriday
Falconry hoods are one of the most common tools we use in the clinic. By gently covering a bird’s eyes, these specialized hoods reduce sensory input and help keep our Bald Eagle patients calm during medical care. #FalconryHood #DidYouKnow #WildlifeRehabilitation
Did you know Bald Eagles were once on the brink, with fewer than 500 breeding pairs in the continental United States? But today, their population has rebounded to more than 400,000 birds across North America. #BaldEagles #WildlifeConservation #YouCanMakeAnImpact
Enrichment isn’t always about food. For Sitka, one of our Bald Eagle ambassadors, enrichment can be as simple as spending time outside on a crisp, sunny morning. #Sunbathing #EnrichmentTime #WildlifeConservation
