If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you know a trans person, even if you don’t realize it. Support, acceptance, and small acts of understanding make a bigger difference than you might think. Please help keep the path open!

At a time when support for trans youth is being challenged in schools, at home, and in access to care, I keep thinking about what it would have meant for me to have access to that path earlier.

There’s a lot of talk today about being trans as a new “fad.” I think what’s actually changed is that young people today have something I didn’t at that age: a path to transition, socially and medically, with support. And fortunately, more are taking it.

In 2016, I was returning to an MSc I had disappeared from years before. My mental health was a mess after a lifetime pretending to be someone I wasn’t. It wasn’t until I started transitioning into myself that I could start building back the other parts of my life, finally landing my dream career.

I don’t usually post for Trans Day of Visibility, or at all. I’m also a day late. But here goes. My name is Levi, and today, I’m an assistant professor. But ~ten years ago, my (legal) name wasn’t Levi—it was Jillian. This is my story.

The clock is ticking: How epigenetics could help save wildlife from collapse In polar bears, dolphins, baboons and more, molecular signatures of aging are changing how conservationists assess population health, resilience and risk

A new article in @knowablemag.bsky.social that highlights some of @levinewediuk.bsky.social's PD work with me and @colingarroway.bsky.social, along with many other efforts to bring epigenetic clocks into conservation efforts.

🧠 New preprint!

@levinewediuk.bsky.social and I take a critical look at the “bigger is better” hypothesis in young teleosts by combining longitudinal survivor studies in a global meta-analysis.

Not so scary after all? Decoding the landscape of fear through hormonal responses to risky times and places Prey must balance the energetic benefits of foraging with avoiding predation risk. This risk-reward trade-off, a cornerstone of behavioural ecology, hinges not only on realized predation risk but also...

It’s a story of how animals perceive risk and the limitations of our human perceptions. Read the preprint to find out more! 5/5 doi.org/10.1101/2025...

So what’s going on? Looking closer at their GPS tracks hints at a clever strategy: forage in cropland, then duck into the forest to rest and de-stress. 4/5

Elk usually forage in cropland, which should feel risky.

But big surprise: their hormone levels don’t indicate they feel fear there. 3/5

We put that idea to the test by tracking wild elk and measuring two hormones that mean fear (glucocorticoids, or GCs) and refuelling (T3). 2/5

Predators hunt where prey forage. So, prey should be afraid of their favourite places to eat… right? 1/5
