A pile of scarves on the floor. The scarves are all the colors of various pride flags. A hand reaches from the middle of the pile, grasping to pull unsuspecting passersby into the depths. A single eye watches... and waits.

There is a lot of scarf now.

(Maybe a bit late for most of you, but...)
Don't forget to bring your pride flags out to the rallies today! Out of your closets and into the streets!

8 short scarves stitched together and arranged in a square on some stairs. Each scarf resembles a pride flag: Rainbow, trans, ace, enby, lesbian, bi, pan, intersex.

In case you were wondering, the pride scarf project continues. It's up to about 400 feet long now. This is the centerpiece of mini flags.

Unfortunately, they're not going to. I was part of the #MorePrideEmojis group that submitted proposals to Unicode for additional flags a few years back (including ace/aro). We were rejected and then they changed the rules to ban proposals for new flags outright.

It looks like Portland is using the first sentence from the NYC definition verbatim, so I'm curious how that's inadequate (Beyond its conflation of romantic and sexual attractions) and how it can be done better.

Do you have a link to the Harvard language?
A few years ago, I was part of a group that (unsuccessfully) tried to get the definition of "Sexual Attraction" in the proposed Equality Act changed, and we were using language based on the NYC Human Rights Law.

Check out what Portland is doing!

Portland is home to multi-generational households. Blended families. Chosen families. Multi-parent families. Consensually nonmonogamous relationships. Asexual and aromantic individuals whose intimate lives may not look like what some expect.

It's over 20 feet long and uses around 3/4 of a mile of yarn.

White letters that say "Places where we learned about asexuality" over a purple background and the logo of the Ace Community Survey Team (four squares colored with the asexual flag colors. The last one has a white tick over it).

White letters that say "Places where we learned about asexuality" over a purple background and the logo of the Ace Community Survey Team (four squares colored with the asexual flag colors. The last one has a white tick over it).

When asked where survey respondents first heard about asexuality and/or the ace spectrum, the most common response among ace respondents and respondents unsure if they were ace was “I don’t remember” (18.7% and 25.7%, respectively). Among ace respondents who remembered where they first heard of asexuality and/or the ace spectrum, Tumblr was the most common platform (15.4%), followed by friends or family (12.9%) and internet searching (11.6%). Among respondents who were unsure if they were ace, the top three locations were Tumblr (15.2%), friends or family (11.8%), and the LGBTQIA+ community (7.7%). The most commonly reported source where non-ace respondents first heard of asexuality and/or the ace spectrum was friends or family (19.5%), followed by Tumblr (18.1%), which ranked as the second most common response among all ace, unsure if ace, and non-ace respondents. The third most common response among non-ace respondents was “I don’t remember” (17.6%), which was the most common response among ace and unsure if ace respondents.

Do you remember where you first heard of the ace spectrum? Most of our 2024 respondents don't.

The word "asexual" has been used to describe a sexual orientation for decades. There is no excuse for its continual misuse.
