Hot things can freeze faster than cool ones. Now, this paradox has gone quantum Unified theory explains Mpemba effect from ice cream to atoms—with implications for faster quantum computing

A new theoretical framework stitches the assorted Mpemba effects together.

It explains how, in each case, a system that’s pushed farther from equilibrium can find a quicker path back to a steady state. https://scim.ag/4tfpVVz

🧵The Covid Inquiry’s latest reports have made one thing brutally clear: the first year of the pandemic - and especially the second Covid wave in winter 2020/21 - was devastating.

Much of that devastation was avoidable.

This 🧵: impact on NHS, impact on bereaved, and avoidable harm. 1/19

Stormy space weather may be garbling messages from aliens, new research suggests Researchers who listen for signs of non-human life say signals ‘can slip below detection thresholds, even if it’s there’

Some more reporting on the study released last week from Dr. Vishal Gajjar and colleagues, which they also shared during the IAU symposium on "Advancing the Search for Technosignatures" hosted by Blue Marble Space.

Earth-size planet spotted with yearlong orbit Long-overlooked Kepler signal discovered by citizen scientists reveals promising world worth a closer look

New planet just dropped and it

1) is almost exactly Earth-sized

2) has a year that's almost exactly 1 Earth year.

3) orbits a star that is not a 💢temperamental little shit M-dwarf 💢but is instead a 🧡 good orange boi 🧡

Artist's impression of rocks on a barren ocean floor, devoid of life, tectonism, or volcanic activity. Europa's seafloor is probably a bit like this, but in absolute darkness (which doesn't make for all that compelling a picture).

Artist's impression of rocks on a barren ocean floor, devoid of life, tectonism, or volcanic activity. Europa's seafloor is probably a bit like this, but in absolute darkness (which doesn't make for all that compelling a picture).

New paper alert!

tl;dr: the seafloor of Europa is probably tectonically inert, meaning little to no active fracturing that could expose fresh rock to seawater.

Without such water–rock reactions the prospect for there being life within Europa just took a big hit.

IT'S ... A FLAT LINE!

BUT NOT AS FLAT AS IT COULD BE!?

IS THERE AN ATMOSPHERE?!?!?
