How do we measure radio emission? 📡🌌
Brightness → signal strength
Spectral → particle energy
Polarization → magnetic fields
Same signal.
Different spectrum.

a grid of 12 plots (4 columns, three rows). Each row represents a frequency that the pulsar is being observed at. The columns are: pulsar profile, frequency vs. pulse phase; time vs. pulse phase; bandpass
A large radio telescope pointed up towards the sky in this webcam image
..... and I'm finished my 8-hour observing run!
Got to finish with another one of my fav millisecond pulsars, PSR J2145-0750. I really like its profile and its one of the ones that is pesky and does not behave as it should!
Idiot pulsars.
Have a good weekend all, over & out!

Onto the next zombie star - this is PSR J1744-3144
My nickanme for this one is "Narsil" (from LOTR) because its narrow, slightly jagged profile is good, and because this one is nearly 100% linearly polarized!
It's fun to use this one in polarization work.

Just had a big RFI (radio freq. interference) surge at the telescope....
ah yes, correlates in time with the humans waking up!
Annoying, but we can zap it out later in post-processing.
The trade off with observing during early hours of morning - signal is good, but sleep is bad!

Why do I call the pulsar PSR J1713+0747 the "problem child"?
Well, it kinda threw a tantrum in 2021 and did something that is extremely uncommon for millisecond pulsars to do!
Thread here on my first-ever, first-author paper about this event

5 am start here as I take over Murriyang's controls for the next 8 hours.
Am just continuing the observation from the last observer, and guess who it is?!
OLD MATE ..... the problem child .... and it's shining brightly around 1.2 GHz today!

In the past when I've observed, we've done some fun mini AMAs on here, so if you have any #RadioAstronomy or #pulsar questions, feel free to shoot them through from now or during the observing session and I'll do my best to answer them for you!
Can be anything you want to know!

A large radio dish, tilted at a 45-degree angle and pointing upwards and left towards the sky. It is daytime. There are three flags flying on poles in the foreground. Surrounding the antenna is grass and several trees.
I've got a big 8-hour (5am-1pm AEDT) observing shift coming up on Saturday morning, using the best telescope in the world - Murriyang!
Will be tracking several pesky pulsars - been a little while since my last observing block, so looking forward to seeing my pulsar friends!
