Pulsars Rewrite the Rules For decades, astronomers thought they knew that pulsars broadcast their signatight beams of radio waves fired from near the surface, close to the magnetic poles. A new study of nearly 200 of the fastest spinning pulsars in the universe has just turned that idea on its head. It turns out these extraordinary objects are broadcasting from two completely separate locations at once, and one of them lies right at the outer edge of their magnetic grip on space itself.

Onto the next zombie star - this is PSR J1744-3144

My nickanme for this one is "Narsil" (from LOTR) because its narrow, slightly jagged profile is good, and because this one is nearly 100% linearly polarized!

It's fun to use this one in polarization work.

Why do I call the pulsar PSR J1713+0747 the "problem child"?

Well, it kinda threw a tantrum in 2021 and did something that is extremely uncommon for millisecond pulsars to do!

Thread here on my first-ever, first-author paper about this event

5 am start here as I take over Murriyang's controls for the next 8 hours.

Am just continuing the observation from the last observer, and guess who it is?!

OLD MATE ..... the problem child .... and it's shining brightly around 1.2 GHz today!

Galactic Center Antimatter Emission Rekindles Debate on Natural Origins and Hypothetical Artificial Activity The Angry Astronaut examines the intense 511 keV gamma-ray line and associated antimatter production reported near Sagittarius A*, alongside a candidate millisecond pulsar detected in the same region. The discussion weighs conventional astrophysical explanations against a speculative scenario in which an advanced civilization could mine and utilize antimatter for power, propulsion, and strategic deterrence.

511 keV gamma-ray emission near Sagittarius A*, plus a candidate millisecond pulsar, reignites whether signals are natural or point to speculative antimatter use by advanced civilizations. A sober look at the observations. #Astrophysics #Antimatter #Pulsars

Scientists Finally Crack the Mystery of the Crab Pulsar’s “Zebra Stripes” After 20 Years A mysterious striped signal from the Crab Pulsar may finally be explained by a delicate balance between plasma effects and gravitational lensing. For more than 20 years, astronomers have been trying to explain a striking pattern in radio waves coming from the Crab Pulsar. The signal contains bright, evenly spaced stripes that stand out sharply [...]

Millisecond Pulsars, a Galactic-Center Candidate, and Renewed Debate Over Extraterrestrial Engineering The host of The Angry Astronaut outlines how millisecond pulsars function as ultra-stable astrophysical clocks and explores recent findings, including a reported candidate pulsar near the Milky Way’s central black hole. The discussion contrasts established formation models with speculative proposals that some pulsars could be engineered by advanced civilizations, while emphasizing mainstream scientific caution.

SNRs are classified by their emission structure. Shell-type remnants show limb-brightened radio emission. Crab-like remnants are pulsar wind nebulae. Composite remnants combine both a shell and a central pulsar wind nebula.

A Pulsar’s Twinkle Is Revealing the Hidden Texture of Space A pulsar’s gentle twinkle is revealing how space quietly bends and delays the signals we receive from the cosmos. For about ten months, scientists led by the SETI Institute closely monitored the pulsar PSR J0332+5434 (also called B0329+54). Their goal was to see how its radio signal appears to “twinkle” as it travels through gas [...]

Supplement to the Open Journal of Astrophysics – “Pulsar Science with the SKAO” The topic of this Supplement is Pulsar Science with the Square Kilometre Array Observatory and it includes updates to the Science Case for the SKAO, the previous version of which is 10 years old. All the papers are indendependently peer-reviewed, which took some organizing and a lot of time because many potential referees are themselves members of the SKA Pulsar Science Working Group! Anyway, the final versions of all the papers hit the arXiv this morning so I published them all today.
