Abantiades hydrographus - Western Rain Moth
Autumn rain and storms overnight brought this stunning Rain Moth to our Perth Hills moth light.
She was big, ~80mm in length, and so beautiful! Such an honour to see these amazing moths.

The Lep record for the longest time as a pupa- as far as I’m aware- is a teensy tiny Philotiella speciosa from the Mojave Desert that eclosed after 18 years! Just imagine…
Raising pillars can certainly take up a lot of time, and can be a long term-commitment. I’ve had some take 5+ years to eclose from the pupa (some buck moths and prairie-desert noctuoids…)
Hmmm… not sure. Can’t think of any butterfly that would have caterpillars like that- I’m thinking moths in the Noctuoidea…
A fly with very long legs and a thin body. The posterior legs literally look like feathers. The eyes are bright red. The fly is black
A very badass fly with feathery legs. Genus Porphyrochroa
There are 214 Democrats in Congress. Where the fuck are the rest of them?
This is fucking awful
Los! Whassup Brah?! I'll send you a private "chat" message...
Large colorful moth with a maroon-and-white striped body at rest below UV lights, on a cool morning in Castle Pines, Colorado. The season is WAY ahead of schedule!
Look who showed up at my lights last night- a full SEVEN WEEKS earlier than the previous early date I have found it here...!!!
Spring is springing way too early here along Colorado's parched Front Range...
Glover's Silk Moth- Hyalophora gloveri
Scary to realize this is the last snowfall in our long-term forecast :(
Got probably 6 inches in Castle Pines but it has been melting about as fast as it has fallen. Thrilled for every last snowflake!
Happy to hear you’re gonna try to ditch Kansas. I don’t know anything about NM liveability, but if you both could get health coverage there, I think it could be ideal, given your goals. Albuquerque area or Santa Fe area…? Tons of great remote places too, but, they are remote…
Very cool! looks like a sphingid in the genus Hyles. Was there any indication where the caterpillar(s) are from (Europe presumed)?
A greater display of sexual dimorphism and size difference

Yes- a very small moth, smaller than anyone realized. Very easy to overlook! As soon as I had it in the vial I knew what it was- since folks around here have been looking for it for decades… Now that it’s pinned, I can verify she’s a female- the holotype and only other known specimen is a male!

Cosmodes elegans - Green-blotched Moth
These lovely moths are relatively frequent visitors to our Perth Hills garden but it’s lovely to see them every time!
These moths are native to Australia and can be seen in most areas except the NT.

Pretty sure I saw and missed one the day before- who saw the vial lowering and said no thanks and flew away…
I wasn’t even sure I had kicked up a moth- thought I maybe only kicked a small pebble. I was so pleased when the pebble under the vial was indeed a moth!

ummmm… nice blog post but the great again garbage is just too gross.
Thanks for your tips!
What genera are most easily moved? I’ve had success moving Eriogonum, about the only one I’ve tried. I assume Yucca roots are too deep to successfully move them?
Sadly, the site where these live is slated for destruction soon. More homes…..
Thanks! It certainly was my photo of the day that day…!
Yes things are desperately dry and early here too. Hoping we will get the needed precipitation in March and April….
I love these first signs of spring!
A favorite of mine, except I despise the common name.
