@samueljbeer.bsky.social showed us the problems that even a single 107-word wordlist can bring , how to contextualize it, and how to recontextualize it. It’s worth it to halt and break your head for a while over a small detail like a punctuation mark.

I always try to wear my most ideophonic shirt when presenting about ideophones.

By the way #DiLegMa3 is a great conference! Can’t wait what today brings but check out @samueljbeer.bsky.social ‘s overview for what the first day was all about.

One of our Housewives on tv “reported” that she finally found someone who ✨ understood ✨ her in ChatGPT… so I’m guessing you’re not looking for an echo chamber lol.

Marching out two publications – Thomas Van Hoey

The gods of academic publishing have been kind to us with two recent publications (in Linguistic Typology at the Crossroads 2025 [2026]; and in Language Variation and Change 2026).

Here is a short reflection about them.
Let me know what you think!

Day two of #IcoLL. It follows a great first day.

Today is cat day in Japan because it’s ninini ににに, reminiscent of the onomatopoeia for cat cry nyaaa にゃー

Opening of IcoLL

Opening of IcoLL

Opening of #IcoLL, *the* conference on iconicity in language and literature.

Looking forward to sharing and learning much. And of course reconnecting with and meeting new scholars. And all of this in Nagoya, Japan!

Huh? It's 2026 and I can't snap my line to a corner of a square in powerpoint? Make it make sense.

Also, the world is quite dreary so find your pockets of goodness and cultivate them.

This is awesome! I have been curating a list of #linguistics journals, with information on their publishing model (and also on whether they admit submissions created by LaTeX, a high-quality, professional Open Source way to produce scientific documents).

I knew 8 of the 200+ editorial board members that mention linguistics, most of which probably have gotten stuck in this venus fly trap. At least we know they are "willing to uphold high editorial standards" and "[s]upport the ethos and vision of the journal" lol

Well I can honestly say that the reviewer wasn’t me but I can say that I’ve seen a very similar paper at the end of last year (“style” and AI wise not content wise) and I’m happy to say the Editor followed the two reviewers’ advice to reject.

The mystery for me was how it even got through to revs…

After passing through the focus group, here is the next exciting installment of my blog: Sunsets, spreadsheets, and languishing leaves.

Mostly pictures of the conferences I attended and presented at over the summer. Enjoy!

A Bayesian dawn in linguistics: Trends, benefits and good practices In recent years, Bayesian statistics has gained traction across a wide range of scientific disciplines. This paper explores the growing application of Bayesian methods within the field of linguistics ...

As I show in my new preprint, #Bayesian statistics is no longer just a niche tool. It’s becoming mainstream in linguistics research. A survey of journal articles shows a rapid rise in Bayesian regression over the past five years. Why?

How to delete your account without agreeing to the new TOS:

In the dialogue box asking you to agree, DO NOT click agree. Instead, click on the TOS link which will open another tab. In the top right of that tab you can go to your account settings and delete your account.

Honoured to have given a plenary lecture at the #SLE2025 conference in Bordeaux!
I dicussed how modal constructions of necessity and obligation in #SingaporeEnglish are affected by contact phenomena.

Can a study rightfully state its “effect is found ACROSS LANGUAGES” when it’s only two (in this case English and another well-studied one)?

What’s the minimum? Serious question.

Stop Getting Fooled by 4+ Star Tourist Traps! Google says it removed 170 million fake reviews in 2023. Still, I’ve been burned way too often. You probably have too. How to avoid tourist traps.

We don’t need AI to solve questions like these, just logical thinking and basic programming skills. Great article!
