An ode to Fall along the Richardson Hwy. Alas, the last storm has all but effaced the colorful leaves. Soon, winter will bring its own brand of beauty. For now, I'll hold on to the vibrant departure that summons winter's arrival.

Fall over the Tenana before the first large snowstorm swept across the Alaska. Not sure how much of the color is going to survive the cold and wet or for how much longer. Hope the colors stick around JUST a while longer.
Fall is a special time of year in and around the mountains. We drove around a while waiting for the light to hit right, and when it did we were in the just the right spot for several great photos.

This beautiful momma moose was grazing with her calf nearby, walking away from me when she turned to let me have this beautiful profile shot of her. She was about six feet at the shoulder, so I made sure she had plenty of distance between us to feel safe.
A foggy Fall morning prevented us from seeing the mountains, so I found a few spots where the fog seemed to actually highlight some of the landscape features that might get less attention during clear skies. This slough along the Tenana is one those.
Fall showing off near Fort Greeley. The clouds drop low in layers over Mt Hayes and accompanying peaks. Beautiful any time of year, but especially gorgeous adorned with Fall colors.

I love finding lighting like this on flowers in the mountains. It's not always easy to find, and sometimes I have to wait for it to be just right, but the results are simply stunning when I can capture it.

This Summer view from Forest Canyon Overlook in RMNP is splashed with color - reds, greens, oranges, blues and yellows. This is a large pano and when I shot it I didn't realize I captured a couple marmots on the rocks in the bottom right.

A foggy morning in RMNP! A blue hour shot near the East entrance is simply mesmerizing. Some mountains glowing neon orange as the sun rises, and a breathtaking view back toward Sheep Lakes from Old Fall River Road above the clouds. Summer mornings like these are truly magical!

This broad-tailed hummingbird buzzed our heads for a while before the wind picked up. He landed on a high branch at first, but opted for a safer spot below in the dense leaves. His respite was brief as he opted to venture out again and chirp around in the wind.

Moraine Park on a foggy morning.
Where land floats and shadows reflectโa place between waking and dreaming.
Like a memory I canโt quite place. A dream that lingeredโฆ.
I could only stand still and hold my breath, careful that even the smallest breeze might blow it all away.

It wasn't fire.
It wasn't a miracle.
It was just water.
A bird shaking off the lake at sunrise.
But in that instant
The light exploded like a scream in the silence,
A holy fracture in the morning stillness,
A defiant spark against dark.
It looked like salvation.
And it was real.
Don't mistake this smile for friendship! Tourons beware, this is a big bull and once those knife-sharp antlers fill in and the rut starts you don't want to be trying to buddy up to him. The competition will be fierce, and you don't want to be on the wrong end of it.

Driving along Trail Ridge Road when there are clouds moving over Longs Peak often affords you the opportunity to see the vistas in a more 3-dimensional aspect. Between the layers of clouds and the layers of hills, the depth of perspective is absolutely astonishing.

Moose Vogue: Summer Issue
Grace. Strength. Attitude.
โBe sure to get my good side.โ
Caught this gorgeous mama striking poses like she knew she was on the cover. RMNP really said runway, but make it wild.

This evening wanderer trotted past me unconcernedly as Spring storms rolled through the valley all around us. We shared the beauty and respect of the moment together while the valley held its breath just long enough for us to meet.

This mallard found the perfect spot in the middle of the river to sit on a dirt mound just high enough to stand on and be out of the water above his feet. The best part? The sandbar was only big enough for one, so he had it all to himself.

A curious, hungry marmot sauntered lazily along the road, disregarding the fact that he was walking nearer to humans. Then he stopped and practically posed for this and a few other photos.

The dragonflies were hovering in and near the tall grass as the wind picked up. I followed this widowskimmer as it found a place in some thick grass to wait out the storm.

A great blue heron takes flight in the sunset light that sneaked through summer storm clouds.

This was one of 6 mule deer bucks that were grazing at sunset along Trail Ridge Road in RMNP Saturday night (14-Jun). Antlers are coming in nice and they all appear healthy. Can't wait to see these fellas' racks in a few months! ๐

Last week of Spring in 2025, and the views from Guanella Pass are gorgeous! From left to right: Mt Spalding, The Sawtooth, Mt Bierstadt. Couldn't have asked for better weather or company. ๐

I managed to glimpse the dew on these leaves in the morning light beneath the canopy of trees at the base of El Dorado Canyon just out of the corner of my eye as a glimmer of sun reflected from them. The contrast was gorgeous!
Medano Creek in Great Sand Dunes NP. Got there at the right time to get some beautiful cloud composition before everything clouded up entirely. Feeling the sand underfoot in the creek is an amazing experience!

The horned lark makes nests on the ground near rabbit brush and sagebrush in the desert areas of southern Colorado. This one was caught happily sunning himself on a small rock in the early morning light.
I love watching the great blue herons here in Colorado. They definitely look prehistoric, but they are also amazingly beautiful and graceful to watch. They take flight and effortlessly travel long distances with incredible speed.

Watching these snowy egrets was a much needed break from recent struggles. A rain storm was moving in and four of these beautiful birds flew around the pond, keeping together mostly. Beautiful creatures!
This spotted towhee almost sounded like a person screaming, which is how it caught my attention! Turns out, I was close enough to its nest to make it alarm in my direction. Their normal song is almost as beautiful they are.

The north end of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. The Gunnison River continues to carve its way through these rocks with the assistance of snow melt, erosion and time.
