And... Another X-class solar 💥flare💥 !
Today, Nov 10, peaking at 09:18UT an X1.2 flare was detected.
Here is the Hα light curve also showing the GOES X-ray light curve

At some point we need to have a discussion about the ethics of participation in press releases as scientists. From today’s K2-18b saga, Nikku Madhusudhan in the press release says ‘The signal came through loud and clear’ (1/n)
Today, we’re launching ‘Strategy 2040’, laying out ESA’s future activities and priorities, with a clear and ambitious vision to cement Europe’s leadership in space. #Strategy2040 will evolve and grow over the years ahead.

Great day at DIAS Dunsink Observatory talking future space missions … and checking out sunspots with the historic Grubb Refractor. Not a bad way to spend my birthday.
First images from the Square Kilometre Array Low Frequency (SKA-Low)!
Taken with only 1,024 of the planned 131,072 antennas, and it's already looking good :)

Congratulations on this huge achievement, Craig. Can’t wait to see the data!
Spotted this rolled up on a shelf in Birr Castle today: “Observations of the radiation of heat from the Moon Dec 1868 - Apr 1869”.
The 4th Earl made a 3 foot telescope and thermopile to measure lunar heat. Pretty amazing.

I had a great time chatting on #Futureproof with @jonathanmccrea.bsky.social on @newstalkfm.bsky.social this weekend, talking about @esascience.esa.int #SolarOrbiter and how we're uncovering new insights about our Sun! ☀️🛰️

Solar Orbiter is getting ready for a close encounter with #Venus.
Today’s flyby will be the first to significantly ‘tilt’ the spacecraft’s orbit and allow it to see the #Sun’s polar regions, which cannot be seen from Earth.

Spotted some apt graffiti by Broombridge this morning while cycling along the Royal Canal to Dunsink - right at the spot where Hamilton first wrote it down:
i² = j² = k² = ijk = -1
😂
The partnership will see Van Morrison provide two students with fully-funded scholarships to assist in their ambitions to become professional musicians.

Change in Paris air quality between 2007 and 2023 using visuals
Air pollution has dropped significantly in #Paris in the last 15 years. Mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social’s leadership has traded car space for green space, safe bike space, kid space.. and traded pollution for people.
Good trade.
Comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS) is putting on quite a show over the last few days in the @esa.int SOHO/LASCO coronagraph images, as it passed through the closest point of its orbit at 0.093 au. This comet's orbit is strongly inclined to the plane of the planets. 👇 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C/2024_...
Hot off the press!
One of my students, Yu Wing (Joshua) Lee, has discovered a new radio transient (along with @manishacaleb.bsky.social).

Good night … from Dunsink Observatory
👏👏
Gooood morning!
As many have pointed out, the LASCO images on the SOHO website are saturated. So this is the result of my own algo for processing them.
And I will echo my sentiments from yesterday: This. Comet. Is. RIDICULOUS! 🤩😍 ☄️🔭☀️
Good luck with launch preps, Craig. Can’t wait to see the data!
Many congratulations for Professor Jackman and grateful for her expert advice and work with @esa!
Rockin’ the RAS 🤘
Congrats Joe!

Thousands of students have arrived at the RDS for the BT Young Scientist & Technology exhibition.
Ahead of the event opening to the public, The Journal spoke to one student who wanted to find out if there is any truth to someone having a “big Irish head”.
