Today's mildly amusing thought: Alma Mater anthems that are nice and poetic except for the obvious CLUNKS where they changed stuff like "sons of [institution]" to include women

I don't really have a particular nasty white people food in my personal family history, though I'm enjoying learning about them, especially the Midwestern abominations that are also technically my heritage

My least favorite Chinese food is fermented black bean sauce on anything. It's bitter and nasty and the food would taste better with no seasoning at all let alone the thousand other good seasonings China has invented what the fuck

Starting a UX design trend of ironic skeumorphism. All the cheesy material textures of 2008 but they are all wrong.

Leather form fields. Denim sliders. Glossy plastic backgrounds with paper trim. It will be so horrible that it will cure screen addiction.

so did people everywhere just intuitively pounce on "touch an ingredient with your good bits then prepare it and serve it to your target"

the boys can be back in town, but without suitable transit and urban infrastructure there will be nowhere for them to go

What is a Golem (I)

Mud brick wall I stand between
hammer blows and fragile bones.
I hold a flock of song birds in my hand,
breath in hollow limbs. They sing until
the shadow of a hawk passes overhead.
Then I gently close my fingers
like floorboards or rafters.

I've got ten days left of #napowrimo and ten ideas for what a golem can be/mean. I'd like to write the rest if the muse permits.

Cis people who did some thinking before coming out to themselves as cis tend to be some of the most reliable, honourable and secure people I’ve ever known.

Carcinisation is fun, but it's just one example of an odd pattern in parallel evolution. Humans probably will not become crabs; mammals have their own patterns which incongruously recur across unrelated clades. I believe our inheritors will evolve long, sticky tongues to feed on burrowing insects.

Hippos are the only land artiodactyls where you can still kind of see the remnants of the (now-almost entirely vanished) big carnivores in the unglate family tree

Imagine telling most of the famous historical generals that you had the means to ensure they *didn't* lose much of their fighting force to disease, but simply won't be using it

I'm not deeply familiar with JFK stuff - why was there the sound of gunshots initially?

A digital drawing of a cobra painting with a brush that it holds with the end of its tail. The cobra is wearing a red beret hat and has several dots of paint on its tail end and one on its nose. The painting it is currently working on shows a green snake forming a heart with its body. In front of the cobra, there are a pallete with colors, a pencil and, behing the art supplies, a bowl of strawberries. Tiny blue footsteps lead from the strawberry-bowl over palette and pencil and right by the snake until its back, where a little rat is sitting, enjoying a strawberry.

IIRC, there is a little Field Museum store directly underneath the skeleton and you can get a Sue the T. rex pin!

my contribution to the airport discourse is if you're going to O'Hare, allow an extra 10 minutes for dinosaur appreciation

A dinosaur without elaborate headgear simply is not dinosauring as hard as they possibly could. Sorry T. rex, maybe try ceratopsing next time, heyoooo

Disney promoted pixar’s films disproportionately more than their own to manufacture consent for the closing of their 2D animation department, which had gained significant bargaining power over payment for their work due to the success of the Disney renaissance
