Daphne Odora By the blank canvas, I stood waiting— waiting for inspiration that would not come. The brushes and paints were ready, yet my mind held only silence. Then you placed a bouquet in my hands: purple Lupines to open the imagination, Asturtium to let my colors pour out with splendour and exuberance. A few Angelicas, interwoven, to steady the breath of inspiration.

Defects of the fairies
Concentrated study
Subtle and profound intellect
and yet so innocent.
An imposter
Introduced him to
Spirits who beguiled him
With angels an
Intervention
And a partnership was established
He
Was much
Hated as a wizard he still supported
The
Magnificent library.
Weary of impostors but remaining blindly loyal to spirits though
Sometimes the angels
Went too far
It did no good to
Be largely vindicated.

Within each pistel endless potential;
the rose is royalty consumed.

Text (written center-aligned, with the latter half of the lines arranged so the words outline a splodge in the negative space between them)

---

Nature Poem

I sat beneath an old, tall tree
(a yew, I believe), and listened
to the chorus of the birds,
their loud, primordial poetry:
the laughing trochees of the great tit,
the wood pigeon’s wheezing spondees,
the lilting dactyls of the blackbird,
the robin’s belligerent free verse
but then
one of the little
feathered bastards
shat on the
page. So I guess
I’ll write about flowers instead.

Sometimes a poem falls in your lap (or in this case on my notebook).

My Brain has a Moment
By S. Reeson

and all the good work is instantly
forgotten books are being banned
years of notes are burning
and it is time to start again
the pile of dirty washing was an omen
I forgot to eat again and in the car park
a failed creative is now crying
because all they want it seems are lies

writing mental health allusions
that fit their definition of conclusion
that sparkle with hollow definition
that performative delusion matters but it never will
my brain has been having these moments
since the dawn of time and to those
hiding their over-picked fingernails and scars
who have come late to the neurodivergent party

I remind you of the constants
that you can rely on to survive
you are a future often written awkwardly
this never devalues a perfect opportunity
go indulge every creative avenue
for no-one else will feel this fiercely
this honesty this untainted truth
that you alone are witness to observe

#NaPoWriMo Day 19.

Yes, I wrote this in an hour. No, I have no qualms about posting it. Yes, some work needs polish. No, this #poem doesn’t. This poem needs to scream in the middle of a field until all the anger has left it. Then, maybe, it can move forward.

Beneath this a text box reads “Choose a piece of furniture in your house. What does it look like? What has it seen? Held? Overheard? Where would it go, if it could? What does it think of you, its owner? Writing as the piece of furniture, answer these questions in a poem.” Beneath this and to the right is the name Freya Gillard. To the left is a black spiky circle with the words Prompt 19 overlaid in white.

The Pirate’s Last Storm The sky was darkened, clouds grown thick with rain, Across the seas a storm rose up in pain. The ship was tossed and turned by raging tide, Above the mast a black flag snapped with pride. Thunder cracked wide; lightning split the night, A maiden bound in ropes, pale with fright, Clung to the mast—her wedding dress now torn, A fragile bloom upon a world war‑worn.

My resulting poem reads:

FINITE

midnight
crashed
and
was
immediate

whispering
trees
describe
the
dark night
happily

somewhat odd
something unique

a little party
dancing
moving
fun
conversations

and time
disappeared among the stars.

Today's REAL poem is titled Heartache lasts a lifetime

Inspired by the song Plaisir d'amour by Nana Mouskouri

Which supposedly also inspired Elvis' song Can't help falling in love.

I saw it on the interwebz so it must be true, right? #poetry #napowrimo #songs

Mortals carried away

stolen from his mother's side while
believing that he had a chance of

in the end
a
