day 16 of national poetry month poem by tophie called "roadways"; it reads as follows:
stretching long, spreading wide, sprawling onward
like a single, endless, exhausting web—
for they are all one monster; merely named
segments that even continents cannot break.
direction, so called, is a trick: we just
have places to be; you can drive “along”
as easily as perpendicular
(which is which?)
dead ends, so called, are just jokes for the mind:
for there’s always another way; the choice
remains yours—take a seat or turn around,
no matter!
powerlessness, so called, is a sick ruse:
we built these things and we can break them down;
the strictures, so perceived, cannot hold us back
for long.

A Sixteenth Regretful Limerick for #NaPoWriMo2026 I regret I've not spent much more timePutting words into meter and rhyme. In it, I take great joy,Have since I was a boy,And I feel that the lack is a crime. And a good time was had by all.Photo by seymasungr on Pexels.com Fewer days remain than have passed this month, but there's still time to get writing done for you!

16.4.2026 - Graceless

Nothing you do every day is graceful.
This month, I’m making myself write
graceless poetry,
inefficient, meatball poetry,
bucket loads of wasted words,
bulked out with extra syllables,
first-thought-least-thought poetry,
pithy Instagram nothingness,
banal, didactic, honest;
all these abstractions I deny
the solidity they’re begging for.
I let them float untethered.

The Things I Still Do for You I still rotate your toys, not because you'll play with them or ignore them, but because love is a habit my hands haven’t unlearned. A small ritual of care, like watering a plant that’s already gone to seed, turning it gently through each season. Your fur still turns up in corners— thin strands of sunlight, delicate— and I can't bring myself to sweep them away.

Sometimes a #napowrimo poem is dense and important. Sometimes it's just mucking about with adverbs.

tophie's day 14 poem for the national poetry month, titled "typist"; it reads as follows
i’ve found typing poetry on typewriters
to be pretty terrible, honestly.
the clicky-clacks are certainly satisfying
(as is the hum of an electric in waiting),
but what if you make a mistake?
what if it all goes sideways, the white-out spills,
or you run out of ideas?

i used to own so many of those
anachronisms—staunch, splendid, silly.
maybe 5? at least 4, certainly 4 or more.
they’ve all wandered off, however;
many had names, but i’ve forgotten most.
that fabulous turquoise electric was nameless,
poor teague (left behind by mistake) was not.

my last was my first—desdemona.
my grandmother’s college companion:
all black paint and art deco mystery,
a delicate “remington noiseless.”
my mother’s got it for now,
unless someone’s thrown it out,
which would, honestly, hurt more than i’d think.

so, this is a day late but i'm (still) trying to not be upset with myself about either perfectionism or "falling behind" on the challenge. mixed results so far. for example: i've left this in arial instead of my usual baskerville to remind myself it's just a draft

The Spaces Between My Questions I see the history stretch back months. Each word, each phrase, each sentence stored as a trail of questions, like breadcrumbs through the mind. Blinking like a patient listener, it waits for queries to be typed in so it can return its many answers. From movie summaries to directions, to the soft, unspoken ache behind the keys, to the questions I never say aloud.

Title: Least Resistance

I don't know.

Maybe I am just a Luddite.
Maybe the Luddites were right.
Maybe trading imperfection for convenience has been killing us since… when?
Since we chose to stay still and plant seeds and let priests and kings take their cut?

I've never lived in a time without supermarkets,
so I don't miss knowing the butcher by name.

There are people living now who won't miss knowing
everything they read was written by a person.

I struggle to write about this without regressing to the cliched notion of the soul.

So much of writing is trying to reroute a river by hand.
The water flows down paths of least resistance, the desire path carved
by everything you've heard already, so if you don’t concentrate,
if you don't tear muscle and tendons wrenching against that gravity,
you end up saying the exact thing that's been said a hundred times before.

‘There is nothing new under the sun.’

So you grab clods of clay and jagged stones and try to carve out some shape
that the water's never flowed before, but there's rocks you can't get out
with your bare hands so you have to leave them there, so it's never shaped
quite how you pictured it, and you're shivering and every joint is screaming
and you've lost track of what you're even trying to do (like how I've lost track
of this metaphor) and who has the energy for this anyway when everything
moves so fast and it takes a thousand hours of digging to produce
an inch of originality and it's so much easier to just let the river flow
where it will.

I don't know.

I have to keep hoping
the sick impulse to reroute that river,
the insanity that makes us see the ugly, unintended shapes
those impassable blocks force us to create and not just accept them
but love them as proof that this was made
by someone with the ability to want things,
I have to hope that specific, human crazy will survive
everything we're doing to cure ourselves.

Today's #napowrimo poem sprung off from the napowrimo.net prompt:

"Today, we challenge you to write a poem that similarly bridges (whether smoothly or not) the seeming divide between poetry and technological advances."
