Grandma Giving Grandpa’s Toast Grandma gathers everyone around the table at Christmas or Thanksgiving, calls us to raise our glasses, and a hush rolls over the room. She lifts her glass, gives the toast now printed out and titled Grandpa Lenny’s Toast. She clears her throat. “Here’s to it, and from it, and to it again…” The words bounce around the table, everyone joining in, voices…

12 - Trust

These days we walk in strange and unaccustomed paths,
with alien plants and soporific scents.
We know the route.
We’ve seen the signposts,
and we hope that other people know the way.

The Sea I took some text from "Treasure Island" by Robert Louis Stevenson and did the Erasure poem. Long this mysterious cold winter, sank upon a frosty morning, all gray shining under the big rock. I stepped on wanting my eyes open and I remember the sea going out  near.

11 - Sharing

You have become a glass being.
A transparent shape of greys and shadows.
I can see your outlines and your workings,
and the secrets you keep close,
but not what they mean.
You don’t wish to share.
You never wish to share.

10 - The Way of Things

Sunlight.
Daylight.
Day.
And today the sun is almost welcome.
Trees grow straight.
Dogs run fast,
and we still have hope.

Pawprints On The Heart Dogs' lives are too short. Some become intertwine within someone's heart, once gone, the heart splinters into pieces. (Why do you leave so soon? To make space for another to be saved. Why do you leave so soon? To remind us nothing loved is ever owned.) The Emptiness of walking through the door-- no wagging tails, no circling joy, only the long silence, and the ache of wishing to see them one last time.

when we turn towards morning
half turned to turning back night
eyes say
night is our charm
nose crawls clear to the Moon
while entireties of our bodies
laugh, toes painted, pointed starlight
we burn the past
rise ash then to rain
and poem begs too
stained we as well

Leatherback: The Ancient Swimmer I have watched the oceans change through the years. Waves beating rocks back and forth until they surrender, grain by grain, to the waiting sea. I have seen clear night skies where stars once burned without interruption give way to smog— a slow choking, a dimming of what once guided me. I existed when dinosaurs ruled the world. I followed the planet’s heartbeat…

9 - This and That

In such a state of that pain,
it is clear that this pain cannot come too soon.
They will fight, and one will lose.
The other will withdraw,
If all goes well.

dance to relevance

Keep It Simple Keep it simple, but the problem was calculated from complex figures, rising at impossible angles, far too advanced to translate into simple terms. Keep it simple, the workout—just jogging three miles along the road, though the road kept bending, curling behind me, trying to catch its own tail. Keep it simple, the words poured out, each one dragging behind it…

Four‑Paw Dash Rhyme See squirrel, chase bird, do hard stare, Fence‑jump high through summer air. Sniff wind, hear call, chase a hare, Spin‑dance wild at dragonfly flare. Four paws down — roadway run. Zoom‑zoom racing through setting sun. Last call heard, ears up high. Paws pad home as voices cry.

7 - Bright, Loud and Sharp

If the light is bright enough,
the darkness will not overcome it.
If the sound is loud enough
the silence will not smother it.
If the pain is sharp enough,
sleep will not wash it away.

Just Trying To Walk The Dog Today I walked the dog today— the normal route, up and around, over a mile it was the same scenery. Complained each time the dog stopped to sniff the blades of grass, to walk around the tree sniffing, leash getting tangled around the trunk. This wasn’t even the retractable leash— I gave up that years ago. Too many problems: the grip,

GPS I hate you, GPS— a deceitful oracle, pretending to know the world while knowing nothing of me. The route I know is short, but you, smug machine, insist on the long way, as if inconvenience were your religion, as if ruining my day were your evolutionary purpose. Why must you torture me with your chirping "Recalculating," every time I dare to trust…
