Visual Patterns 🤝 Pattern Blocks
I am currently OBSESSED, in a (mostly) healthy way, with @fawnnguyen.substack.com visual patterns and @mathforlove.bsky.social pattern blocks for kids to learn and create patterns. Ah-may-zing. Also, I am in LOVE with Mary Vail's Thinking Desks, they are phenomenal!

When Birds Do Math Storytelling and Surprising Depth At the Building Thinking Classrooms conference in Seattle this summer, I was struck by how powerful storytelling can be as an instructional strategy-- and how rarely....

This blog post, by Ian Maurer is a quick and easy read about how extensions can really make a task sing (or chirp). This blog post reminds me that a stories task can start off simple and with the right perspective, can make the mathematics very deep and complex.

A man in Finland received a speeding ticket and had to pay $103,000! The penalty was so harsh because fines in Finland are based not just on the severity of the offense, but on the offender’s income. Can students figure out Vanjoki’s annual income?

@vendi55.bsky.social @webbkyle.bsky.social @maegangiroux.bsky.social Hi all. I've recently discovered the BTC book and it's re-inspired me to build more collaborative problem solving into my practice. I'm really enjoying your podcasts to fill in gaps and help adapt my initial ideas.

When it is being said by rural people in Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan (population 478 and very English) is isn't pronounced Surrey. Next time I see you Nat I'll be waiting to hear you pronounce poutine and croissant! #BetterSoundReaaaaalFrench

It is almost as egregious as Nat pronouncing the word Souris as 'Surrey'

A scene from Tom and Jerry. Top frame: Tom smiling looking at baby chicks labeled 31, 37, 41, 43, 47, 53. Bottom frame: Tom looking suspicious at Jerry holding yellow feathers, labeled 57.

Two parallel lines going up. The top one says "The age I consider 'old'" and the bottom one says "My age."

Black educators and our co-agitators/co-disruptors are out here doing the work. It don’t take much to find us. It’s a choice at this point.

The co-opting of language like “good trouble” without interrogating what that actually means is irresponsible. The all white starter pack of educators “getting in good trouble” had good intentions, I’m sure… but the impact is exclusion and alienation. Good trouble would have meant doing the WORK 1/

I facilitated learning for instructors in the local International Languages Program and received positive feedback; “You speak exactly the right amount at exactly the right pace.”

😊 I’m grateful that participants feel respected and cared for when I lead professional learning.

You are one of the only presenters I have ever seen who could command a room with a quiet intensity and confidence that creates such powerful learning. Anyone who has a chance to learn from you is incredibly lucky.
