Today in Unsuitable Dog Walk Attire, I bring you a late #1860s blue silk moiré gown for your delectation to coincide with a walk along the banks of the Dart. Watered silk would be perfect for the bubble of the river & it was only a little bit muddy @mdhistory.bsky.social #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

Dressing the Queen is out tomorrow! It seeks to tell stories of long forgotten artisans like Ethel Oatham, a dress trimmings maker of the type that decorates this late #1860s mantle, twisting and braiding yards of silk. The labour survives, the names do not @metmuseum.org #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

One of the makers to feature in Dressing the Queen is James Churchyard, seen here peering around his loom. He was a master weaver of Norwich shawls, popular with Queen Victoria. Here a shawl remodelled into a mid #1860s dressing gown. Publication day April 2! Norwich Museums #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

Whilst it is always illuminating to see historic dress mounted on dress forms, I do also like the images of garments laid out like a beautiful butterfly, its wings a-flutter and its patterns plain for all to see. Mid #1860s candy stripe @metmuseum.org #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

When the bigger picture is a little too much to take in, then a focus on some details can offer some welcome distraction. There is much to distract here from striped silk to bows and a shivery fringe. Early #1860s #V&A #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡
