2026 WARNING: Why History is Repeating Itself (And We’re Ignoring the Signs) Is 2026 the New 1918? The Terrifying Reality of History Rhyming What if the crisis you’re living through right now isn’t a freak accident, but a rerun? 🕵️‍♂️ Most people believe we are moving forward, but the data suggests we are spinning in circles. From the 17th-century tulip mania to the volatile crypto bubbles of today, the human psyche remains trapped in a loop of irrational exuberance and catastrophic fallout. In this episode, we peel back the curtain on systemic vulnerability and ask the uncomfortable question: Are our institutions built to last, or are they designed to fail? 🔍 Why You Can't Afford to Ignore the Past We dive deep into the patterns of collapse that connect the 1918 influenza legacy to our modern global health failures. We aren't just talking about history; we are analyzing the warning signs of institutional decay that mirror the fall of empires. In this episode, we answer: - Why do financial bubbles repeat? We explore the link between Dutch bulbs and digital blocks. - Is democratic backsliding inevitable? Learn the early warning signals of autocracy and the erosion of democratic norms. - What are the similarities between the 1918 flu and modern pandemics? The answer lies in institutional complacency. 📉 The Anatomy of a Crash Whether it’s the geopolitical conflict cycles sparked by human error or the historical climate anomalies like the Dust Bowl echoing in today’s mega-droughts, the "History Rhymes" framework proves that past is prologue. We are currently navigating a decade of disillusionment, where social destabilization isn't just a threat—it's a recurring feature of the human experience. Don't let institutional memory fade when you need it most. We break down how to identify systemic vulnerability before the next speculative hysteria takes hold. It’s time to stop being a victim of the cycle and start recognizing the patterns of collapse. ✨ Join the conversation! The #1918flu devastated us but we carried on w/ memory the fallen. Failing to prepare for predictable pandemics lets them die in vain. Society did not crumble then & it’s not going to now, but we must prepare seriously, always. We are not prepared. #COVIDー19 #coronavirus #CDC

#1918Flu Just about every little town in South Africa has memorials for both World Wars. There are just 4 memorials for the 1918 Flu - which killed so many more people, in a much shorter time.

#1918Flu Howard started collecting oral histories from 1918 Flu survivors 40 years ago, with a sense that it needed to be done with some urgency 😀

#1918Flu The pandemic in S Africa was a month of horror - that was both an accelerator for pre-existing tendencies, and an initiator for newborn initiatives. With very long-term consequences in the case of residential apartheid.

#1918Flu Sadly too, separate townships for blacks and others were also established from 1923, as a misguided means of preventing spread of disease

#1918Flu The flowering of African Christian churches in S Africa and Ghana post 1918 was due to dissatisfaction with the mainstream churches’ unsatisfying explanations of the pandemic

#1918Flu 50-60% of the South African population was infected - by November 1918, it was already waning. However, the Prime Minister Louis Botha was probably a victim of the much less severe 3rd wave. SA was the 3rd worst affected country in the world.

#1918Flu Howard Phillips showed evidence that the German armies on the Western Front in August 1918 had 17% of soldiers down with flu, against 1-3% for the Allies - and wonders how this could NOT have affected the outcome of the war.

#1918Flu This seems to be a rather overlooked article on 1918 Flu - and it makes a LOT of good points worth remembering!

Given that this is the #1918Flu centenary, it's worth looking at the CDC commemorative page:

I'm coming late to this, but editorial in 25th Jan Nature claims "50-100 mill ppl died" of #1918Flu of 1.9 billion alive, for "a case fatality rate of 2.5%". Ummm...worst case is 5% of ALL PEOPLE ALIVE; least is 2.5%. If 1/4 people got infected, then CFR is 10-20%!!
