Piece Of Mind album cover (1983), Iron Maiden- 50th anniversary (Kink In Pop Culture- music, album covers, 1975- current) English heavy metal band, Iron Maiden, formed on Christmas day, December 25th, 1975. You would think as a band that named themselves after a piece of medieval torture equipment (that didn't actually exist in medieval times) lron Maiden's music output would be full of bondage and torture.... but surprisingly, it's not. The shop displayed fetishwear and accoutrements designed to fuse youth and sexual subcultures, deploying sex as a cultural weapon to provoke and confront. This article examines the Sadean influences that found expression through punk, suggesting that the Marquis de Sade had a seminal if diffused impact on the punk-informed cultures that evolved through the 1970s into the 1980s. A French-German production, the movie was directed by Just Jaeckin and starred Corinne Clery and Udo Kier. The Story of O was the director's follow up to his movie adaption of the erotic novel Emmanuel in 1974. Just Jaeckin would go on to direct adaptations of Lady Chatterley's Lover in 1981 and the work of fetish artist John Willie in Gwendoline, aka The Perils of Gwendoline in the Land of the Yik Yak, in 1984. The film follows the plot and events of the book but the ending is different. Story of O, illustrated version by Guido Crepax graphic novel cover (1978) Story of O Comes to America week 1978 would see Grove Press publish the first American edition of the graphic novel version of Story of O. Illustrated by legendary Italian comic artist Guido Crepax, it was originally released in Europe in 1975. Grove Press had published the first American edition of The Story of O in 1965. I remember seeing ads for subsequent printings of this adaption, now broken up into separate volumes, solicited in Preview movie magazine in the early 1980s. Guido Crepax's version of the tale would be reprinted throughout the decades to follow and continues to be influential and inspirational to this day.
