As someone that has read 2O10 and its sequels 2061 and 3001, be aware that HAL doesn't "die" Bowman asks the alien intelligence to spare him as he (Bowman) needs something closer to himself to interact with. And "they" agree.

Note, that 2OO1 was released before any probes had been sent to the Jovian system. By the time of the release of #2010TheYearWeMakeContact, the voyager probes had given us our first real look. And Europa will have 2 visitors in the years to come.
