HARTEBEEST CHASES OFF BAY CAT!!! #2021MMM

ASIA: Oh, how the turn tables. #2021MMM

ANNE: Outclocked the cheetah. #2021MMM

ASIA: And...there goes Bay Cat. I didn't even know they could run that fast! #2021MMM

ANNE: I bet he thinks the cheetah is back for another round. The snorting, tossing of horns, & cavorting (yes that's a technical term from Estes 1991) is classic aggressive behavior. Headed towards the Bay Cat! #2021MMM...

ANNE: I think the Beest sees the cat! ASIA: Yeah, there's definite movement from Hartebeest towards Bay Cat. #2021MMM

ASIA: It's not like last week where he was facing a somewhat similar-sized Red Fox. That Beest is enor--oh, there, Bay Cat on the move. Getting up &....trying to slink away. Classic low "I'm a scared cat" posture LMAO #2021MMM

ASIA: I said, Bay Cat looks really red! He's been crouched down, lurking & watching. Doing recon on his opponent. ANNE: Well at least one of the kitties is being smart today #2021MMM

ANNE: Back to the scheduled battle! I think I see that Bay Cat's tiny head over there, peeking out of the grass. ASIA: Not as tiny as a cheetah head. ANNE: Excuse ME? #2021MMM

ASIA: Looks like the cheetah's the one running away here. The Beest is right on its tail! ANNE: Sigh. And there it goes. ASIA: Beest trots back to the termite mound in victory. #2021MMM

ASIA: I mean, go big or go home... ANNE: Which is right what the cheetah is doing. Beest just stopped & faced him. Cheetahs never know what to do with the pointy front end, they prefer the plump rump end that can be tripped as it runs away #2021MMM

ANNE: Yeah, but I've seen it before, young cheetah who haven't dialed in their hunting skills yet will go for "Inappropriate prey items" (Caro 1994), including ones that are inappropriately large. #2021MMM...

ASIA: *mumuring* we don't get paid enough for that. *out loud* Isn't that cheetah a little...puny for for a full grown Beest, though? #2021MMM

0 0 1 0

ANNE: Something spooked the Hartebeest! Would you look at that, a hungry cheetah. Maybe we'll have a 2-on-1, a menage a trois of pain, shall we say. #2021MMM

ASIA: Oh looks like the battle is beginning! Tonight we're back in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, this time on the South African side. This might be a little more open than Bay Cat's used to. In fact, it looks rather nervous from... what is going on over there??? #2021MMM

ANNE: In South Africa wildlife can be owned by private individuals, & Hartebeest are kept for trophy hunting & photographic safaris. To prevent inbreeding people move them extensively between these small isolated populations (Laubscher et al 2015) #2021MMM...

ANNE: Funnily enough humans are also a threat to our Beest. They were hammered by hunting but are now rebounding after being reintroduced into protected areas & on private lands #2021MMM...

ANNE: Hartebeest has been been pretty chill so far, hasn't had to do much except watch the vervets scare the pants off a lemur and pick squirrel goo out from the cleft of his hooves #2021MMM
