Back on Day 9 we created a homemade comfort meal. Today, we are revisiting that task with a slight twist! Not only are we tapping into creation energy to honor the rebirth of light, but harnessing the warmth that the sun symbolizes.

Create a warm beverage for yourself, whether a hot chocolate, capuccino, matcha or chai latte, or mug of warm golden milk. Pair this toasty beverage with a comfort treat or snack such as biscotti, scone, biscuit, or cookie. Drink slowly and with intention to focus on the warmth expanding!

Venture outside for 3 minutes today and do something fun! If you don’t have a social outing to piggyback off of, we’re focused on doing something that amuses us. Here are but a sample of ideas to draw inspiration from:

⛄ Play in the Snow (or leaves, grass, sand, garden, etc based upon your climate)

For today’s task we are getting playful within the natural world!!

On the agenda for today is a box breathing practice! If you’re not familiar, box breathing means that the duration of an inhale, breath hold, exhale, and then additional hold are all the same count. For us, we’ll be doing a 6-count box – don’t worry I’ll walk you through it!

Get in a comfortable seat, take a deep inhale through your nose and slowly exhale out through your mouth to reset. Now, inhale for a count of 6. Gently pause and hold your breath (no forcing or clenching!) for 6 counts. Then slowly release for 6 counts; this is a controlled exhale versus a burst! And finally, pause again for a count of 6 before restarting the cycle.

We’ll repeat the box breathing 15 more times; this way we will have one box to recognize each day of the 21-Day Challenge thus far! Remember to go slowly and relax as much as possible to relieve tension. Once your 16 reps are done, take a huge inhale and immediate but slow exhale.

As usual, grab your writing supplies or devices and have them at the ready before we begin with today’s practice. We’ll start with 3 deep breaths in through the nose and slowly out through the mouth. Then, place one hand over your heart and close your eyes. Breathe with intention as you feel your heartbeat. 

After 1 minute, rest your other hand on the base of your stomach at your pelvis. Take 4 deep breaths. When you’re ready, open your eyes and turn to your journaling space to free-write on the following prompt: “When I feel safe, I…”

Last night we were tasked with reading (any amount) before bed and keeping that quiet reading device-free. Tonight we are expanding that out into a totally tech-free evening! Now, depending on your schedule and lifestyle your “evening” may start at a different time than someone else. The main guidance here is to be honest with yourself about the appropriate start time to actually experience the benefits of the detox.

If you follow me on my other socials you may have heard about the Tech Shabbats I’ve been doing over the last month. Those are 4hr blocks, which I have to plan for (e.g., writing down on paper some shabbat-approved to dos). I share that because today’s challenge requires that same level of intention!

The root of the Winter Solstice rituals over the centuries is in recognizing the wonder and vastness of nature, especially the Sun. Head outside today for a minimum of 5 minutes. Take in the fresh air, go for a short walk, touch a tree, or test out a grounding practice.
