It had become clear to members of Congress that prohibition had been a terrible mistake. It had little effect on the availability of alcohol. Worse yet, it contributed to the expansion of organized crime that prospered by selling banned substances.

On this day in 1933, the U.S. Congress passed the Blain Act, a major step in repealing Prohibition or the making, selling, or buying of alcoholic drinks.
