30 Days of Horror Writers
Day 30: Do you read the last chapter/last page of a book before you begin?
No! Oh my god, NO!! That's... why would you do that?!!!

Day 29: Do you buy books based on their covers?
Not solely, but I have gone out of my way to buy editions from other countries if I prefer that cover. Also, poorly designed/AI covers put me off.

Day 28: Who's your favourite antagonist outside your own work?
Given how the characters behave, the same as Day 27. Although definitely George Stark from THE DARK HALF as well.

Day 27: Who's your favourite protagonist outside your own work?
It's tied between Tess and Bibi from Kathe Koja's SKIN and Phineas and Jude from Will Christopher Baer's KISS ME, JUDAS.

Day 26: What have you learned about yourself through writing your characters?
That I will do all I can, but expect to ultimately be swallowed by the black hole of an utterly indifferent cosmos.

Day 25: What's the worst writing advice you've heard?
"Show, don't tell." I tied myself in knots for years over this and never had a firm definition in spite of it being presented as an absolute

Day 24 (after illness mega-hiatus): What's your favourite piece of writing advice?
Something @horrorsong.blog told me: "Go further." Just beautifully simple.

14. I'm pretty much only good at doing new daily habits for TWO WEEKS, before falling off...as evidenced by my June #horrorwriters #30DaysofQandA and even my current #funfacts for July #authorquestions. 🤷🏻♀️
30 Days of Horror Writers
Day 23: Do you imagine real people (personal/celebrities) as your characters when you write?
I have done, sometimes. Rarely, if ever, celebrities. They're also often facets/fragments of me.

Day 22: What quirk do you always include?
Um, is dental trauma a quirk? Or carrying a box cutter? Or having a melancholy death? Because if they are, then those are pretty frequent.

Q21
Many of my heroes are criminals. Burroughs killed his wife. Dr. Suess pushed his wife to suicide. Georges Bataille, de Sade, well documented creeps. Wouldn't want to hang out with them.
I thought The Passenger was a weak final book, too.

Day 21(after hiatus): Which of your fave writers/inspirational heroes has let you down/how?
I don't see the value in answering this but it's an expanding list, and usually male. Feel free to ask which HAVEN'T let me down.

Q20
I dislike stories with characters romantically entangled when they clearly just hate each other. Fascist power fantasies can fuck off. Cruelty on the part of the author, as opposed to a character's. Shallow observations. Inanity.

Q19
I don't use beta readers. I will read a fresh piece out loud to my partner. One part of this is seeing what their thoughts are, yes, but it is more about the rhythm and flow of the piece. This is the most valuable piece of data for my edit.

Q18
The Kid and the Cat has always been a favorite of mine. A very dark tale about a young psychopath. A friend of mine shared it on their facebook and it ended up garnering death threats against me. Not particularly constructive criticism.

Day 20: What will keep you away from a story (turn offs/dislikes)
Graphic harm to children. Unremitting cruelty in general - there has to be *some* hope, however small or open to interpretation, for me to stick around.

Day 19: Who are your beta readers?
I don't really have any, but have had them in the past. Although a writer I admire very much helped me enormously in fixing the answer for Day 18, for which 🖤🖤🖤

Q17
What I think is my most interesting opening line:
"A river of viscous red waterfalls to an ocean of blue, green, red, and white with specks of yellow and fiery orange making themselves known. "
Favorites: Naked Lunch, Requiem for a Dream

30. Do you read the last chapter or last page of a book before you begin?
No. I don’t want to know the ending before I start, and anyway that part won’t mean anything to me without the rest of the book.

Day Thirty: Do You Read The Last Chapter of a Book Before You Begin?
Nah. Only time I did something similar was as an 11 year old reading the Crichton dinosaur books, looking for the dino kills.
'Cause I'm a morbid fuck 🫠
This was fun!

Day 30.
Sometimes I'll read the last paragraph or line of a book, but not right off the bat. Generally if I'm getting bored with it.

I guess I am the first to answer the final question. This was fun.
30. Do I read the last chapter or page of a new book before beginning it? No, but I used to look at the last page number to know how many the book had.

Day 18: What story of yours do you love but it seems like no one else does?
I gave up submitting my story HER SMILE THE DAYLIGHT SKY after its 43rd rejection. A new version should appear soon 🤞

29. Do you buy books based on their covers?
No, I mostly buy them based on the authors or reviews. You know what I used to buy based on covers? Thrift store CDs. If your album or band name had “Tiger” or “Elephant” in it, I bought it.

Day Twenty Nine: Do You Buy Books Based On Their Covers?
I never judge books by their covers! 🧐
I judge them by the amount of reviews they have on Amazon.
🫢
But uh, feel free to admire the artwork on my books, and purchase them on that merit 😑

Day 29.
The cover is a tiny part of my decision to buy a book. A cool cover image is nice, but the blurb and the author have far more weight, even if the cover's crap.

Day 29–Do I buy books based on their covers? Sometimes they’re a factor, sure. But I think they’re more a factor in what I don’t buy. Some covers seem hyperperfect (AI?), some concepts overused, so yeah…I’m sure my subconscious tastes factor in.

29. Do I buy books based on their covers? Not really, I tend to go for ones that have been recommended or are from an author I'm familiar with.
