6/6 📉 Final Note: A-23A officially shrank below tracking size on March 3, 2026. Yet its trail of life, stretching for hundreds of miles, proves that the death of an ice giant is a powerful engine for new life. 🌊 #A23A #NASA

The story of one of the world’s oldest icebergs is nearly at an end, after a breathtaking 40-year journey that has captivated scientists
The #iceberg, known as #A23a, was once the largest on #Earth, covering an area over twice the size of Greater London
Now it has just weeks left

#A23a is currently the world’s largest iceberg, a colossal slab of ice roughly 1,500 square miles in size that recently broke free after being grounded for decades.
Since 2023, it has been drifting beyond Antarctic waters.

A 9 km lake on an 11 km long iceberg about 200 km NW of South Georgia. One of the larger satellite bergs of iceberg #A23a following breakups over the last several months. Seen by #Sentinel-2 on 9 January 2026 We took a look in the recent iceberg events is this video➡️: youtu.be/GdkSp_8y85Q
Today we check out what happened to #Iceberg #A23a ? It was the largest iceberg in the world but multiple large breakups have left it much smaller, covered in lakes as shooting off east northeast across the southern Atlantic. #A23 youtu.be/GdkSp_8y85Q

The image shows a large iceberg at centre left, partly blue from meltwater on top of it. Also a lot of clouds are visible over a dark ocean. The upper right part of the image has a different tone. It was taken on the previous orbit of the satellite when light conditions were different.
In this image the iceberg starts to break up. A large white part with a stream of small icebergs starts to drift away from the main iceberg.
Seen through clouds the main part of the iceberg, still blue from the meltwater on top of it is above and left of centre. To its lower left a smaller and a large part of broken off. To its right the large white piece with its stream of small icebergs has drifted away.
The large iceberg #A23a northwest of South Georgia island in the far southern Atlantic Ocean has broken up over the past few days. It's often hidden from view by clouds. Last December a large pool of meltwater formed on top of it. Images from 9, 13 and 17 January, from Aqua (9, 13) and SuomiNPP (17)

The image shows a somewhat oblique view of a large patch of ice in the ocean, with veil clouds obscuring part of the view. The ice patch, which is iceberg A23a, is blueish, with a white edge, giving the appearance of being somewhat transparant. The iceberg drifts in the southern Atlantic Ocean, northwest of South Georgia island. Numerous small icebergs are visible too.
The image is a straight-down satellite view of iceberg A23a with clouds at bottom and some at right. The ocean has a dark grey colour. The irregular shaped iceberg is in the centre of the image. Faint blue stripes are visible on the iceberg. Numerous white chuncks of ice can be seen in the ocean.
Meltwater on an iceberg. Astronaut Chris Williams took this image of iceberg #A23a from space station #ISS on 27 December 2025. The blue surface hints at meltwater. For comparison #Terra image from 28 December. Original eol.jsc.nasa.gov/SearchPhotos... @daveatcogs.bsky.social @aretsch.bsky.social
The image shows a top-down view on the ocean with some white clouds. In the centre is iceberg A23a, predominantly blueish in colour, with some bands too. The blue is most likely caused by meltwater on top of the iceberg.
Fascinating image. Other satellites saw this too. Here is the view from the #Terra satellite on 28 December 2025. #A23a
The 🟦 in the middle is not an Atoll in the Pacific, it is the iceberg #A23a on which meltwater can be seen.
A very surreal sight I think. 🙏Sentinel3
BTW to the right of it, approximately at 16:00h, we see South Georgia.
