I've only just now come across #AAPISheRose - what wonderful, wonderful photos and memories people have shared!
My mother was told by her first advisor in the econ dept that if she married she would not finish. She changed advisors.
“I will not sit here and be Pencesplained” —Kamala

Kamala was at her most passionate and animated talking about racial justice. Love that.

These stories of Asian Americans pushing societal boundaries to speak up and out are what I hold close to me today in my own politics, and I want to push the boundaries even more as I imagine the world I leave behind for my own daughter. #AAPISheRose
Throughout my family, I've seen women who defied the limitations that society placed upon them, who in their own ways courageously fought for agency and dignity. These are the stories that continue to inspire me. #AAPISheRose
Some who left the family and homes they knew to immigrate, including my mother who arrived with a college degree no one would recognize and who didn't speak a word of English. She taught herself English, typing skills, and computer programming so she could find work. #AAPISheRose
Mothers and aunts a generation before me who cared for their younger siblings, and who also worked to put themselves through college when the family couldn't afford their tuition. #AAPISheRose
Grandmothers who prized the education of their daughters, and who escaped political upheaval to rebuild families and work through poverty so that their own sons AND daughters could receive schooling. #AAPISheRose
The family lore passed down to me of the women in my family, and the stories of war, trauma, and survival that are written into my blood: a grandmother raised in a family where only boys were literate, and who secretly taught herself to read by moonlight. #AAPISheRose
I've spoken previously for the resonance Boggs' writings has with me, and how I've been deeply inspired by her lifetime of work.
Today, though, I also wanted to speak about some more personal feminist icons: the women in my family who first inspired my feminism. #AAPISheRose
Today is first VP Debate, and will feature Harris as first Black and Asian American woman to be nominated for VP by a major political party.
I've been asked to use this opportunity to help highlight a feminist icon and her story. We all know my icon is Boggs. #AAPISheRose
Please check out the hashtag #AAPISheRose—it’s FULL of stories like this of amazing, resilient, iconic AAPI women. Share your own AAPI shero, and tell us how #SheRose. And root for @KamalaHarris to crush it tonight at the debate! https://x.com/originalspin/status/1313891076780953602
At some point the town decided to nominate Aunty Chih-Mei for national legislature. She won & served for decades.
Know that infamous clip of the Taiwan legislature in a giant brawl? She’s somewhere in the middle—because as things got rough, she tried to break it up. #AAPISheRose
And this is why, when I had my huge argument with my parents about going into journalism, I was able to point out that without newspapers, I wouldn’t have existed.
Also? My parents never stopped me from reading comics as a kid, because they saved my mom’s family. #AAPISheRose
This is my mom, Bailing. She was the first of 12 siblings of a single mom to go to college in the US. On the day our first AAPI VP candidate @KamalaHarris takes the stage, I honor her and celebrate all the badass AAPI women who made us possible. #AAPISheRose
