The #NSHE Board of Regents opposed having faculty collective bargaining rights in state law with #AB191 at the #NVLeg. Now they want to change their own internal limited bargaining process for faculty: www.nevadafacultyalliance.org/NewsArchive/...
Faculty are negotiating NOW. Oppose the changes.
Not been a great #NVLeg for collective bargaining. #AB191 to give the RIGHT to bargain to #NSHE faculty and graduate assistants can't get a hearing because our bosses say they can't afford lots of lawyers. Our other public employee colleagues can't get their contract because bad budget year.
It's true. It's even a joke among our lobbyist colleagues (what's your bill again?). But for real, we need a hearing on #AB191 before the #NVLeg session runs out!
@nvfa.bsky.social is skeptical of fiscal notes on bills at the #NVLeg especially for #AB191:
With Regents opposed, is this:
An attempt to make AB 191 unaffordable and kill the bill; An attempt to slow down the formation of new bargaining units; or
A lack of understanding of collective bargaining.
#NSHE Regents oppose #AB191. Said their own policy (that does not have the force of law) is enough even though only covers academic faculty (not grad workers). Regents can take away what we do have. We need rights in law #NVLeg
In the #NSHE meeting, justifying a large fiscal note was that currently NSHE and institutions do not have the HR resources to EXPLAIN workplace policies (and recognizing workplace rights in law would mean they need to be more accountable to this). This is why we need #AB191 #NVLeg
How to kill a bill at #NVLeg? Have massive fiscal notes. #NSHE Regents just voted to oppose #AB191 citing fiscal notes. @nvfa.bsky.social believes this is "weaponization" of fiscal notes: www.nevadafacultyalliance.org/NewsArchive/...
Update: #NSHE #Regents OPPOSE #AB191. Cited that the BIG Fiscal note (NSHE thinks lots of lawyers are needed) is reason. NSHE has bargained with 3 institutions previously without hiring a law firm. @nvfa.bsky.social will fight on at #NVLeg
"Shared Governance" is not a substitute for collective bargaining rights enshrined in law. #NVLeg #AB191
Faculty don't just lobby at the #NVLeg but we also have to advocate for our bills for #NSHE #Regent support. #AB191
Here's @nvfa.bsky.social take on the "common sense" of collective bargaining. Thanks to @thisisreno.bsky.social for publishing!

#AB191 is a common sense solution for collective bargaining for #NSHE Nevada faculty and graduate assistants. thisisreno.com/2025/04/nshe... #NvLeg @aaup.bsky.social @aft.org @nvfa.bsky.social
Educators in the Nevada System of Higher Education are the largest group of public employees in the state without collective bargaining rights in state law. That must change. #UnionNews #AB191
