research lunch break from @librarycongress and I'm eating a Choco Taco and it's @violetbfox's fault
the real chocotaco was inside of me all along #alaac19
The post office near #ALAac19 has an extremely long line of librarians mailing books home lmao
that feel when twitter autoplays a very loud alex jones video in the middle of a Serious (tm) presentation
just kill me ๐ณ๐โ ๏ธ #ALAac19
@gordondunsire presents on shortcuts in #newRDA I'm not sure what's I'm troubled by with this model โ it doesn't make blank nodes but...
#ALAac19
#ALAac19 the Que(e)ry party was actually liver damaging
awkwardly went to the Hilton Embassy for @john_overholt's panel but then found out it's actually at a DIFFERENT Hilton WAY across town so I missed it
HEARTBROKEN #ALAac19
omg #alaac19 @violetbfox is just the nicest person ๐ญโฅ๏ธ
@ncacensorship makes an appearance to tell other censorship stories, inc. Florida banning magazines because they talked about Florida banning magazines.
representative gives huge thanks to @oif and thanks all librarians in room
someone is crying near me, awww #alaac19
audience member: I do not think that @ALALibrary should accredit ANY program that does not teach #IntellectualFreedom โ is met with loud applause
#alaac19
@KPekoll talks about how libraries in NJ had to censor art because they had no policy about how to deal with art -- #libraries #alaac19 should think about banned ANYTHING -- displays, art, websites, music, more
themes I have noticed at #alaac19 for both #critcat and #intellectualfreedom --
(1) Libraries are now (and have been) about more than just books
(2) we need to think about things more ethically and morally
(3) have more conversations with each other!
find your support system -- sat in that meeting w/everyone who hired me i was terrified -- but I was never meant to feel like i said something wrong they supported me and channeled my passion - if you cant find it at work find it from @ALALibrary @OIF, twitter, elsewhere #alaac19
"if a person comes into library and has a positive reaction that is good -- but if they have a negative reaction there was nothing to draw them in and to help answer their questions -- (#alaac19)
YES: "black history is not now, black history is current, it is happening now" -- talks about community reactions -- patron raised questions about why it was in children's department -- desk staff had conversation and patron left saying "thank you for not being mad!"
#alaac19
@KPekoll's edited volume is @ALALibrary published btwwww.alastore.ala.org/content/beyond-banned-bo... @oif #alaac19
@storytimedrag is the @ for that i think -- Larson also recommends thinking about alternative funding in the sense of having other groups fund it so they dont have to defend "taxpayer dollars on this" -- in reality the cost was less than a penny for every resident #alaac19
the items mentioned align with Wards -- be proactive! plan & think about possible political edges to things that could happen -- I think we unfortunately live in a world where anything can go viral now so #alaac19 do need to think about how to be ready and consistent
i'm definitely not the person tearing up in the corner @ these news stories& Larson's presentation #alaac19 -- larson goes on to explain what they would ahve done differently --
talks about getting calls from every state and texts and emails and tweets, etc, etc -- the result was HUGE amounts of crowds at these events -- and also had to get in touch with police for protection -- this presentation is being recorded #alaac19 #alaleftbehind - watch it !
the library went through their usual social media marketing -- facebook, twitter, newsletter ------- and in an hour they started getting attacked and swamped about this program #alaac19
Ward got repeated pushback from other staff members and administration for posting anything with the slightest whiff of controversy on social media -- a banned books display by a student / a "What Comes Next" post 2016 election guide / other exs #alaac19
Censorship Beyond Books is about to start! Here's the summary & the people are @KPekoll Sarah Ward of @Hunter_College Library Laura Broderick of @ppld Phoebe Larson of @stpaullibrary
#ALAac19 @oif @BeyondBannedBooks #IntellectualFreedom
y'all, livetweeting administrative stuff is tedious and thankless but SO DAMN IMPORTANT so let's not let @OpOnions go unthanked #ALAac19
I went to #ALAac19 and all I got was soreness in everything and absolutely no sleep
