39. That’s a wrap on #ARockAndAHardPlace by Peter David, who authored many novels and comics for Star Trek as well as for franchises such as "The Incredible Hulk” & “Spiderman”. I’m glad we were able to honor him in our own small way. Thanks to everyone who posted, replied & liked.

Please take this poll about this past weekend's discussion book.

37. Since this was an early TNG novel, I couldn’t find any references to self-sealing stembolts (or Chateau Picard 😊). However, there were a few callbacks to earlier Trek episodes. What were some of your favorite Trek references in #ARockAndAHardPlace?
#TrekBookClub
Riker and Stone are quite good at what they do. Stone is one that would be good for the fringe jobs. Riker is a middle of the road whereas he is dependable. They both get job done.

They are similar to a degree. They won't back down from a fight. Riker is more diplomatic to Stone's wild card.

This one thing--I don't think Peter David understood Troi's empathy. In the scene where she vents to Beverly, she says she can't "accidentally" read someone. She most certainly can! It was a lot more natural than PD made it sound. #TrekBookClub #ARockAndAHardPlace
36. If there is a topic you would like to discuss which hasn’t been mentioned yet, please post it here. Some potential topics include a favorite section, a memorable guest character or a favorite sequence.
#TrekBookClub #ARockAndAHardPlace
That's just what I was thinking. Riker was your standard by-the-book officer, while Stone was "the ends justify the means" guy. #TrekBookClub #ARockAndAHardPlace
I think that was the best thing for Stone, he didn't belong in Starfleet--he was too burnt out. I don't think he would've lasted much longer. He's better as a civilian He's a survivor so being at Paradise suits him. What I want for him? I want him to be at peace. #TrekBookClub #ARockAndAHardPlace
[Conclusion and Wrap Up]
35. Compare and contrast Commanders Riker and Stone? How were they similar? How were they different? What types of assignments would Riker be better than Stone at? What other assignments would Stone be better than Riker at?
#TrekBookClub #ARockAndAHardPlace
Stone was a perfect psychological study of a person that has lived by extreme pain. That is why he was able push through all the challenges that were set upon him.

#ARockAndAHardPlace
Stone has a wild spirit that was controlled by his environment. Being with the terraformers, he can help tame a world. I think he is in his element on this world. He will forge a new path for himself.

34. The novel concluded with Stone resigning from Starfleet and deciding to stay on Paradise and help the terraformers. Why did he decide to do that? What do you think will happen to him? How would you want to see his story arc continue?

33. The final battle between Stone and the Wild Thing Leader. How were these two characters similar? Why did Stone show emotion (e.g. sadness?) when the Wild Thing Leader died?
#TrekBookClub #ARockAndAHardPlace
I think this scene explains a lot but we need to look at his childhood and how he was raise too. We are products of our environment. He may have been the unluckiest Starfleet personnel during this timeframe.

#ARockAndAHardPlace
A very intense scene it is. Riker was so unsure if he would die or be saved. Stone must have had one maniacal look on his face to make Riker fear for his life. I am glad that Stone did rescue him.

#ARockAndAHardPlace
Action packed for sure. 2 beings struggling for existence. Even though Riker wasn't in his element, he had to survive. His determination was key in this action sequence.

#ARockAndAHardPlace
He was a victim of bioengineering. That is my take on it. He was an intelligent animal doing what he can do to ensure the survival of his kind.

That was a hard one. I can understand Starfleet not getting involved in the coup. Ianni was an independent world. However, I can't understand, given the violence, why Ianni was still given UFP membership?? That disgusted me, so, yeah, it explains a lot about Stone. #TrekBookClub #ARockAndAHardPlace
32. We get more background history about Stone when he recounted to Riker the traumatic events on Ianni which affected him deeply. What did you think of this section? Does this explain all his actions/conversations and why he is the way he is?
#TrekBookClub #ARockAndAHardPlace
(1/2)
Riker was probably convinced he was going to die since the normal thing would've been for Stone to immediately save him yet he didn't. He let Riker dangle on the cliff and then when he actually pulled up, he kept him hostage at the edge. #TrekBookClub #ARockAndAHardPlace
31. Stone and Riker meet face-to-face and we learn more about Stone’s feelings towards Riker. How would you summarize Stone’s approach to the start of his conversation with with Riker? What was Riker feeling during this time?
#TrekBookClub #ARockAndAHardPlace
Since I accidentally answered this in # 29, I'll answer that question as to whether the Wild Thing is a villain. I'd say no. It was just a wild animal that went on instinct and survival. #TrekBookClub #ARockAndAHardPlace
30. Wild Thing Leader confront Stone and then Riker. We rarely get a narrative which includes a bit of perspective from an animal. What did you think of this sequence?
#TrekBookClub #ARockAndAHardPlace
I wasn't fond of this part. The Wild Things were just wild animals. I didn't see a reason to get into the Leader's head any more than if it was just a stray wolf or grizzly bear. #TrekBookClub #ARockAndAHardPlace
29. We meet the Leader of the Wild Things. What did you think of this character? Was he the villain of this story arc?
#TrekBookClub #ARockAndAHardPlace
Well for starters I had both. Most likely would choose family. I am retired AF. I have a family but I am divorced. Family is important. In Dec I became a grandfather. I would choose that.

#ARockAndAHardPlace
Definitely a sign he has a screw loose but he knows how to beat the system. I wouldn't say he was dangerous but he sure has some issues. I sure wouldn't cross paths with him.

Well for one it is definitely difficult to beat Mother Nature. Unless you have machinery. When it is just you and the elements then you struggle through to the end. I went caving in Scotland and man was that rough in some of those tight places.
