41. That’s a wrap on the discussion of “Star Trek: Ex Machina”. Thanks to everyone who posted, replied, reposted & liked. I would also like to thank author @clbennettauthor.bsky.social for joining & sharing his thoughts and perspectives. Thanks all!

I remember what else I wanted to mention--the officer who laid into McCoy when Spring Rain was in sickbay. I understand her point but she was pretty heavy handed, I kept waiting for Christine to give her a talking-to. I'm glad she found out she was wrong about McCoy. #TrekBookClub #StarTrekExMachina
Here are the ones that I found:
- One of the publishing locations listed on the title page of the novel is Lorina, the main location where this story takes place (see below image - bottom right)
- TAS characters, M’Ress & Arex
- Edith Keeler - “The City on the Edge of Forever”

It is great sequel to ST:TMP. I enjoyed revisiting Yonada and it's people. The interaction between McCoy and Spock. In addition to Chekov's move into security.

39. I couldn’t find any references to self-sealing stembolts (or Chateau Picard 😊). However, there were other callbacks to past Trek episodes. What were some of your favorite Trek references in #StarTrekExMachina?

I just wanted to mention that I enjoyed the various quotes which started each chapter. They added additional context and perspective on the events in the story.

A bit of interesting TOS guest star trivia – On TOS, Natira was portrayed by actress Katherine Woodville. At that time, she was married to Patrick Macnee. He was best known as agent John Steed on the 1960s’ TV show “The Avengers”. It also turns out that she was ...

Here is some interesting background information about "Ex Machina" from the "Star Trek: Voyages of Imagination" reference book.
#TrekBookClub
love the quote that history isn't the past but the interpretation of the past, and every generation writes it in its own image. That seems very apropos right now. #TrekBookClub #StarTrekExMachina
Kirk learned more about Decker & being comfortable as Captain after a few yrs as Admiral. Spock learned about accepting his human side & it's ok to express emotions. McCoy learned he can be a good CMO again. Sulu, Chekov & Uhura became more comfortable with more responsibility. (1/2)

38. If there is a topic from the book you would like to discuss which hasn’t been mentioned yet, please post it here. Some potential topics include a favorite section, a memorable guest character or a favorite sequence.

I think they are going in the right direction. Natira and Rishala both seem to be good leaders who have the colony's interest at heart (unlike Dovraku). If they are open minded, willing to negotiate and compromise, then they should be able to help the colony recover and thrive.

They are going in different directions - Natira helping Lorina recover from all that has happened and McCoy resuming his job as CMO on the Enterprise. I did like how they were able to meet again here but don't know if both will be happy doing something else.

Kirk was more in the background than usual. This focused on Bones. Spock, and Chekov, with some Sulu. It pointed them towards taking on more responsibilities and/or command. #TrekBookClub #StarTrekExMachina
As we age we evolve into something better. That is what the Enterprise crew did. They took their experiences and grew from past experiences. What we do as a species.

#StarTrekExMachina
I think they'll work it out. They have made good progress together and seem to want a better future. #TrekBookClub #StarTrekExMachina
I really liked this part, seeing how these people and the sun got woven into the mythology of Yonada. Kirk says "History isn't the past, it's the interpretation of the past" and "we all create history in our own image". I'm sure this applies to Earth's history too #TrekBookClub #StarTrekExMachina
They all learned that they could adapt--Kirk to this new Enterprise and crew, Spock to his new balance between logic and emotion and McCoy to being a CMO to a wide variety of species. By TWOK, they were all comfortable in their roles in Starfleet. #TrekBookClub #StarTrekExMachina
There was an attraction there, but they had different goals in life. It was probably for the best. #TrekBookClub #StarTrekExMachina
I'm amazed that they survived in the asteroid for so long. Truly something they should be grateful for. #TrekBookClub #StarTrekExMachina
[Conclusion and Wrap Up]
37. What did Kirk, Spock and McCoy learn from this mission and how did this story ”bridge” their character development arcs between TOS & TMP with TWOK & later?
#TrekBookClub #StarTrekExMachina
They need to listen to and respect one another's viewpoints. The society can't just ignore the faith since that's part of their identity; their past. there has to be compromise and understanding. #TrekBookClub #StarTrekExMachina
I feel like they will evolve from this situation. They will find their purpose and meet the people's needs.

36. How do you think Lorina colony and its leaders, like Natira and Rishala, will handle recent events? What would be some keys to success that they would need to do in order to thrive in the future?
#TrekBookClub #StarTrekExMachina
I really do not think that it would work. They did the nature thing and parted ways. With McCoy on the Enterprise, I highly doubt it.
