Another terrific presentation from the @partnersrcn symposium #atbc2018: Robin Chazdon showed urgent need for studies on human benefits of restoration treatments. Shockingly, only 4 studies compared have water supply across diff modes of reforestation
.@ChrisJKettle convinced me that genetic diversity is hugely important for tropical forest restoration. He showed: Entire tree pops commonly associated with 1 founder and inbred trees more likely to die. Lack of genetic diversity maybe one reason why many projects fail. #atbc2018
Great day spent at Bako National Park after #ATBC2018. Silvery langur, proboscis monkeys, lots of birds and even a pit viper (too bad I didn't bring my good camera)! I'm going to miss Malaysia.
Zooming in to a fine scale, @leightonreid presented on secondary forest loss in Costa Rica. With survival analysis, he showed that most secondary forests were ephemeral. Good news: "lifespan" of these new forests was predictable from landscape features #ATBC2018 @partnersrcn
my favorite conservation presentation of #ATBC2018 was @naomibschwartz on reforestation reversals. She showed that forest cover gain across Latin America is often temporary. if we want to rely on natural regeneration we must learn how to protect these new forests. @partnersrcn
how should we study effects of temperature change on forest dynamics?@tommaso_jucker used microclimate loggers and LiDAR to show local forest structure alters regional temperature by an order of magnitude. important work showing a way forward on this complex problem #ATBC2018
I will be tweeting about some of my favorite presentations from #ATBC2018 in Kuching, Malaysia in the next several days. This was a great conference!
Great conference in Kuching, Malaysia, #ATBC2018! Made some great contacts and potential collaborations, looking forward to meeting all of you again next year. And I've finally jumped on the twitter bandwagon #batecology #bats
The excellent #ATBC2018 Kuching has one more day to go but I am already getting excited about #ATBC2019 Madagascar!
Really important (and well-attended plenary) session on diversity and inclusion at #ATBC2018 . Cecilia Dahlsjo @oxfordgeography on the challenges women face throughout careers, Sheema Aziz on treating tropical researchers and colleagues as equals in all aspects of science.
#ATBC2018 Thought-provoking presentation by @BrunaLab on how scientific editors are gatekeepers of science, carry implicit biases that all people do, and are overwhelmingly from the anglophone West (77%). How does this affect how a truly global science develops?
terrific symposium on tree demography at #ATBC2018 organized by Sean McMahon. A general take-away: value of coming up with functional groups based on growth and survival (imo much better than trait work that assumes beforehand that leaf traits, seed mass, etc are important)
Blog/haiku competition!
Morning #ATBC2018. We are having a competition. Please send your blogs (max 500 words) or haikus (on any part of your @ATBC experience eg talks, people to social@biotropica.org by Wed eve. Prizes for best entries. U can share entries online at any time.
Very proud of @oxfordgeography DPhil June Rubis for giving the opening keynote of #atbc2018 on indigenous perspectives on conservation in Sarawak, in front of 900 delegates from 66 countries. Well done June and I know you are an inspiration for many others in the room.
The opening keynote of #atbc2018 in Kuching is by June Rubis, an indigenous Sarawakian scholar studying for her DPhil at @ecioxford @oxfordgeography @UniofOxford @OxfordEcosystem
Whoops. The hashtag should be #ATBC2018
