Tropical Cyclone Luana is approaching the coast of WA. She is UGLY, but will pose a fairly high flood risk. Multiple roads have been closed and high rainfall totals are expected.

After a few days of drier air keeping a lid on things across the #TopEnd, storms returned to #Darwin this afternoon.
A couple shots from the #drone, including a frame grab from the video of one of the many large clear-air #lightning bolts this storm produced β‘οΈ

With the setting sun illuminating the rain curtains, #Darwin city in the background looks dwarfed by this approaching storm earlier this evening.
Moving forward, some drier air moving into the #TopEnd will likely keep storm activity muted for a few days now π

Yet another very pretty late afternoon #thunderstorm rolling over the #Darwin area earlier, probably for the 3rd or 4th day in a row now.
These outflow-dominant storms are often a feature of the later stages of wet season here in the #TopEnd π©οΈ

Little Miss Messy ... While ACCESS and EC detirms are agressive, the ensembles are all over the place ... Keeping an eye on this one but lots of uncertainty.INVEST #96S TL #18U #Cyclone #TropWX #AUWX
There are few places on earth that encapsulate vastness and remoteness like the #Kimberly region of far NW #Australia
Nearly half a million square kilometres of almost uninhabited wilderness featuring some of the planets oldest rock and escarpment formations
Breathtaking beauty π

A couple of hours ago, the area of disturbed weather off the NW coast of Australia pretty much looked like a bona fide tropical #cyclone. Since then the appearance has degraded somewhat but multiple distinct rainbands are still trying to wrap into the LLCC (1/6). #WAwx #AUwx
Weakish #storms around #darwin and surrounds again this afternoon, nothing to write home about but pretty none the less π©οΈ

Big 'ole cloud to ground #lightning bolt just making into the shot from right of frame. This particular storm was producing discharges like this every few seconds but unfortunately persistent light anvil rain made it tricky to keep the lens clear of raindrops π©οΈ

Beyond 04U which looks to remain offshore and relatively weak, later next week is where things might start to get a little more interesting for potential tropical cyclone development closer to the Australian mainland. Euro ensemble has been warming the idea in recent days.
Watching π

Ensemble models are continuing to suggest one or two tropical developments off the NW WA coast over the next week or two associated with a WWB in the region. Environmental conditions initially don't look overly favourable, however SSTs are extremely warm so certainly needs to be watched π
